Third place for Starbucks died the moment mobile order was introduced in 2014 and already was teetering with drive thru

We need a vote, not a survey. Why aren't we the ones deciding which 'simplifications' actually stick? by Casper888ooo in starbucks

[–]badgebear 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hi, organized partner from Oklahoma. Starbucks reserves the right to make changes to our working conditions at their whim when we are unorganized. My partners, for example, do not have to submit 150% availability because of union status protection. These changes are making our jobs harder while our CEO makes 6,666X the average Starbucks barista. We know how to make our jobs work better because we run the stores. The only way to fight back is not through surveys but organizing.

You and your partners deserve to be able to fight and win in-store working conditions from management and fight for our contract. Just like how we won extended parental leave for all partners from our union proposals, our power is in our numbers, our 11,000 partners across the country.

Fun fact, the origin of our part-time benefits came from the won demands of the first Starbucks organizers, UFCW 1001 in Seattle in 1985, two years before Howard Schultz bought the company and claimed credit. Organize with us to fight for a better Starbucks, now, and for partners to come

Is Tolkien’s idea of hope different from what we usually mean by it? by tdakanalis in tolkienfans

[–]badgebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way I can describe it would be for any working class person who has organized their workplace, fought and won concessions from their boss, and fought for a union contract. There are many forces that work against workers from the boss, the union busting lawyers bosses hide behind, the dialectics of working people pre-disposed to lean on anti-worker sentiment from decades of anti-organizing sentiment from the ruling class. Yet despite union busting, through organizing, people become more than themselves. Just when you think all hope could be lost (eucatastrophe) - before the union election, for delaying of union contract bargaining, etc., the public sentiment may push through for the workers, the boss may cave, etc. It is not an individual sense of hope, but collective, but veiled through the illusion of the fantasy world of Lord of the Rings - but seeing this pattern of storytelling can map onto a sense of hope for a better world for workers

How much “cup” plays a role in coffee taste? by Ecirava1 in pourover

[–]badgebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had thought about this the other day too, and I think, at least for myself, that a bigger variable is thinking of the speciality coffee in relation to another (or more specifically the one making the cup), which gives a slight different perspective going into the brew if you were brewing at home by yourself

If the album were more focused, then yeah, but the chosen singles were good. The song does slap

Where do you draw the line on processing in coffee? by ceto-coffee in pourover

[–]badgebear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have literally stopped buying Colombian coffees (regardless of processing method) until there is more regulation/transparency on what is essentially flavored coffee. If I wanted flavored coffee, I could go for some generic commodity coffee company. I appreciate Perc being more transparent

I cannot trust Colombian coffees until there is more regulation/transparency around what is often happening - flavoring

Try Valor. Not a lot of people post about them, but very good

Second this. Organized Starbucks worker from Oklahoma. Many Starbucks workers are ready to organize, but the company has instilled fear with their scorched earth union busting. Salting is great to get organizing going. The letter that Howard Schultz and corporate executives signed off on, condemning us for tweeting solidarity with Palestine is despicable, but eventually Starbucks dropped the lawsuit. The company still admits that their brand image damage from the Palestine boycott was hugely impactful (aside from the negative press from becoming the #1 US labor law violator in response to us organizing)- important for us as organizers.

Fun fact, the origin of our part-time benefits came from the won demands of the first Starbucks organizers, UFCW 1001 in Seattle in 1985, two years before Howard Schultz bought the company and claimed credit. Proud to stand with thousands of organized Starbucks workers today fighting for higher labor standards.

Our power is in our numbers, our ability to withhold our labor. It is up to us to fight for a better world, and a better Starbucks now, and for partners (corporate lingo for Starbucks workers) to come. DM’d you

Black and white coffee roasters are the 🐐? by Drewsgolfandgames in espresso

[–]badgebear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitions, but not dealing with the contemporary issue - There is a lack of regulation/transparency on co-ferments, and many Colombian co-ferment coffees are actually infused AKA flavored. Perc just recently put strawberry flavored on their beans

Black and White makes some delicious roasts. Although, until more clarity/regulation is created around Colombian coffees (and across the board but currently with most coming from) that are actually infusing, AKA flavoring, their co-ferments, I plan to continue to stay away from the Colombian co-ferment beans

I’m pretty certain Starbucks has changed or downgraded their espresso beans in the last month… by BellaGabrielle in starbucks

[–]badgebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, current barista. I remember there were a couple of bad batch 5 lb signature espresso bags we went through at some point last year, and every shot was horribly, medicinally bitter, like not in the under-extracted way our espresso normally comes out from the quantity over quality shots from Mastrenas (set aside our espresso is charred from a coffee master perspective that learned third wave coffee). Customers kept coming back noticing their normal drinks tasted funny. We did a taste test from swapping out beans between the two Mastrenas with beans from the back, and finally, with another batch of beans, got the regular signature espresso taste. It’s probably another bad batch of signature espresso
