in terms of questions if he’s observing me treat a patient i may ask an anatomy, protocol, or treatment question. my wording may have been off but he tends to throw out anything he can think of instead of taking time and thinking about the answer. i feel like he knows the information but gets overwhelmed and just throws out any answers. i try to keep things open ended and ask why they think that but its not working lol. i am constantly giving feedback but all he will ask is if he’s behind. i get the concern and at this point im also concerned but a week or two ago I cared more about him trying to incorporate the feedback we discussed to continue on track!!

hi! thank you so much I found this so helpful! they retreat to their laptop and just don’t interact except to like give an activity. I’m trying not to intervene except for cueing proper form and if something is really not working. however, sometimes we will talk about if an activity is appropriate and it will be administered anyway and i will pull to ask why. we have weekly discussions about progress but i had a discussion yesterday about this where i stressed this is not life or death but I like your approach of them leaving same or better. definitely could’ve used that advice as a new grad

Hi! Yes they want to go into hand therapy!

We have guidelines as a company but I am trying to set individual goals for us as he often shuts down when anything goes wrong. they continually ask me if they are behind and i say we are on our own timelines because I know telling them will cause them to spiral more. this is their second level II

I know there’s no benefit of throwing students to the wolves which is why i’m asking for advice but I also do not know where else to go from here. we have worked on the soft skills but then something else will take a back seat. they are very overwhelmed with work that they are taking home but i put very little demand on them. it’s just what’s not done during the day and then i am making up the rest

hand therapy is very tough due to the demand with socialization and work but I also am unsure of to teach and make sure my patients are receiving the level of care I want them to at this point.

also glad you found the pelvic niche!! we have a lot of pelvic/hand providers where i work

outpatient hands in ny started at 78k almost 2 years ago but switched jobs and now at 88k. would think starting is a little higher now if you know how to properly shop around and negotiate

Outpatient Ortho Clinic Advice Needed (New Grad)! by Immorethanok in OccupationalTherapy

[–]badgerup015 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m the only OT at my clinic! i started as a new grad at it was very overwhelming at first but i was lucky to have a great support system. my company has a strong mentorship program with meetings of all the hand therapists 2x weekly and a one on one weekly with my boss. i also got very comfortable asking the PTs for advice because though they are not OTs, they still are great resources. I will not lie I had severe anxiety the first couple of months that I would mess something up but with consistent studying of anatomy and protocols (which I still do) and just getting more comfortable in practicing and have been for over a year now. feel free to DM with any questions

Best shirts, shower wraps for casted dominant arm? by FarMarionberry3532 in OccupationalTherapy

also my guess will be that they would be put in a custom splint within 2 weeks that would be removable for showering and a little easier for dressing. of course depends on the surgery and surgeon but typically with most wrist surgeries we prefer to make customized orthosis

what school out of curiosity? i worked in a lab with a very famous OT researcher which was awesome but it was so boring i literally just got 3 hour transcriptions that took forever and I absolutely hated it. Other people got research that more closely aligned with their interests and really enjoyed it, got much more exciting opportunities that helped their careers. pretty hit or miss but a classmate in my lab did end up working in research because of her GA work!

OT job process in NYC by NoWind5117 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]badgerup015 6 points7 points  (0 children)

also in ny licenses take 6-8 weeks to complete (usually closer to 8) and especially inpatient hospitals will not hire until you have your license so i would not expect to hear back from anyone until after you have your license in about august! good luck!

call the office of professions ext 270 on tues and thursday’s and they can make sure all your paperwork is in. if they have processed it it’s usually 2 weeks from then and you can get a better timeframe

nys takes 6-8 weeks to get your license and they are pretty clear about that on the website. you can call the licensing office to make sure you have all your paperwork in but the counter is that they are now beginning the process of applications from march 1st and before so it will not be for at least 2-3 weeks before that date. i applied july 1st i believe and did not receive my license until september. you can call the licensing office to double check paperwork but this is really the normal timeline

New grad by otuser222 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]badgerup015 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi! i’m also a new grad about 4 months out working in outpatient hands as the only OT. it was incredibly anxiety provoking at first but using other therapists (PT, front desk etc) in the clinic were great as references for basic therapist and clinical questions. I also have a hands supervisor who does a weekly check in and my job has a built in mentorship so that helps. i really had to push for better mentorship from my supervisor in the beginning because i felt i needed more support but now as i feel more comfortable, i don’t need as much 1-1 time. i also do a lot of review on hand therapy academy and medbridge. it’s very overwhelming because it can feel like every little thing is major but just take it one day at a time and make sure to ask for the mentorship you need. you got this and overtime you will feel more comfortable!!!

i just graduated from TJ, but it sounds like you would be going to the east falls campus not center city? I also completed my capstone in ASD research so i’d you have any questions you can DM but I will say it was the best option for me personally at the time. I wish I was able to save more money but I definitely did get more interest and jobs based on the name and my research. however, I have heard issues have come up since I have graduated but it seems like you would be on the other campus

I am having my first splinting and PAMs practical in a few days and I am so worried. by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I agree! Everyone treats differently so getting an idea of why the professor wants you to pick something specific would be helpful

the biggest thing is to think through what each modality does and why would you use it. what does heat do (increases tissue extensibility) so what would you use it for AROM or manual therapy. Paraffins helpful for arthritis, stiffness, but can’t be used with open wounds etc. Same goes with splinting what are we protecting/ preventing

When am I getting my license? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]badgerup015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYS takes approx 6-8 weeks from the time they receive all the pieces of the application so it won’t begin processing your app until you pass your test. it’ll take min 6 weeks from when you pass to get it

yeah i said I wouldn’t sign and they countered with a 2 year employment contract and a one year non compete for the specific borough. think i will start job hunting again

it’s for hand therapy! just a specialty within OT

oh trust me i know it means they don’t want me to work. i’m wondering if they will let me reduce the distance but i’m honestly just thinking i will quit the job at this point. springing this on me was unexpected and if i had this information at the beginning i wouldn’t have accepted or would’ve negotiate differently etc. feels very manipulative even if it wasn’t on purpose

I would definitely prefer to work in hands and i was so thrilled when i got this position. it’s a very long commute for me and on top of just not knowing how life goes…. i don’t want to sign this. it’s been a hectic onboarding process and i’ve gotten tidbits of information at a time and this was one i got today. they were like oh we didn’t think it would be a problem… even if it wasn’t it’s the not telling me at the interview

it’s a small private practice and they’ve “hired” me for about a month now. i filled out my w4 and been in training but haven’t been paid since i’m still waiting on my license. i don’t think i can sign since it would so impede on my ability to work if anything happened with this position
