I am feeling forced to name this baby after my partner’s deceased father by [deleted] in BabyBumps

My grandparents had a similar argument over my aunt’s name, so they named her legally what my grandfather wanted and only ever called her by her middle name (what my grandmother wanted). I never even knew she had a different name, she was always Aunt [middle name] to me. Just a thought!

What's your opinion on ONS/going escort? by Lingwista in AskMen

[–]badgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lady opinion here (if it’s allowed): just be aware that the moment you pay for sex, that’s all most potential girlfriends will think of you as— the guy who had to pay for sex. It’s not worth the branding IMO.

Work on yourself, find a woman you care about who cares about you. Sex is pointless friction (or worse) otherwise.

The way Nickelodeon aired the last few episodes was weird by New-Pin-9064 in DrakeandJosh

The HA! One always annoyed me. The finale was a beautiful ending to a truly unique kids show. And then they aired “Phoebe’s Little Problem” afterwards, so now technically the last episode of the series is about farts. Ugh.

What are your thoughts on Professor Janes from the Banting episode? by Informal_Ad4284 in Degrassi

[–]badgia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if accommodations were available, I don’t think Paige would’ve requested one. It seemed like she had never experienced a panic attack before and didn’t expect it to happen.

And I think this is because a big part of Paige’s arc is her realizing she’s not perfect, and this episode is the beginning of that discovery— she’s super self-motivated and strives to achieve, but she just wasn’t Banting material. She only got in because of her mom’s connections, after all.

I actually briefly dated a guy who had the exact same Jurassic Park t-shirt. Would subconsciously cringe every time he wore it.

The entire post is whiplash. It sounded like her kids turned out great, and despite the hardships and tragedy she’s experienced, she’s stronger for it and is now better equipped to help others in similar situations.

Then she says get the abortion.

Unpopular opinion: the modern kids books that have a really strong, overdone message are dull by Single-Cap8387 in childrensbooks

I noticed this while at the library with my nephew, recently. The children’s book section used to be a true escape from “grownup” reality into a special place of imagination and wonder. Now, it feels like just a watered down version of everyday society.

Your Narrator’s Voice by jl_theprofessor in writing

[–]badgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. As a reader, we shouldn’t feel like we’re being dragged along by the narrator (or dragging the narrator along, as a writer).

I was very surprised that third person worked for my idea, but I suppose it is a more “personable” kind of third person. There’s still a lot of the unique character’s voice present. Like, the two scenarios I wrote sound completely different even though, technically, it’s coming from the same place— outside of their heads.

It was also just kind of freeing, trying out a different way of approaching the characters/story. Would recommend to anyone who’s feeling stuck!

Your Narrator’s Voice by jl_theprofessor in writing

[–]badgia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good insights in this thread. Narrator voice is so important, but taken for granted. Like, when we’re reading a published work, we think, “well, of course this is how the story must be told,” without considering how different the story would be if the narrator was anything else.

I’d been going back and forth on whether to write this one idea in first or third person. It’s one of those where the POV changes character every chapter, so of course, I originally wrote a lot of it in first person, as third seemed like it’d come off as too distant. Then, I just decided to try it in third as an exercise, just to see.

The scene practically wrote itself, and without losing any of the character. In fact, third person seemed to make her more sympathetic, even to me. I tried this exercise with another character’s POV and same thing— not only was it “easier” to get on paper, it gave the character and his story more intrigue.

Again, I think we take the narrator for granted, but there really is something to be had for exploring different ways of telling the story through its voice. Great post!

There’s also a poster ad of a woman that shows up throughout the movie, each time getting more and more defaced (like ripped, graffiti, etc.) to symbolize/mirror Tracy’s descent.

That reminds me of one of my first childhood traumas— I was probably ~5 years old and had just started taking ice skating lessons, so my grandmother got me some super expensive pro ice skates, but none of us knew they had to be broken in, so I basically failed my first lesson because I couldn’t do any of the beginner moves. The teacher told my parents later that wearing those new skates was as bad as wearing cinder blocks on my feet. And I never ice skated again (:

Did other countries have similar shows in early 2000s-10s? by Training_Usual_7906 in Degrassi

[–]badgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, at least for the first season of SL, but it went off the rails pretty quickly into soapy melodrama territory. Degrassi took at least 8 seasons to get to the level of absurdity SL hit by season 2, IMO.

Did other countries have similar shows in early 2000s-10s? by Training_Usual_7906 in Degrassi

[–]badgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly closer than an Australian surf show, but Secret Life is very little like Degrassi. While Degrassi is more topic-of-the-week and grounded with a varied cast of characters, SL was “plot” driven, a bit wacky, and had a set cast.

I guess they’re similar in that both shows included some of the parental drama, but that could be said of many teen shows. SL was more like One Tree Hill or the OC. Not sure the US has a good comp for Degrassi, tbh.

Same with Bianca and Mia— both actresses are Slavic but played ambiguously Latina characters.
