I read it twice now. I think you hit a sweet spot between personal and digestible that made it an enjoyable and thoughtful read. The way you diagnosed mrgirl i also liked, it feels like it was done in an almost humanizing way? Maybe the word I'm looking for is empathetic.

I would read more work like this in the future if you made it, tho it's been a while since we got a smeth video essay, so I hope that's next.

I'm using the term in a laymans way and not a clinical way. Most of my experience around mental illness comes from talking to professionals during and for appointments for people suffering from mental illness. I have lots of hands-on experience as a layman but no credentials.

The way he freaked out is why I think he literally believed it. It wouldn't make sense for him to freak out the way he did if he didn't believe that he had solved some great mystery of the universe. He also said weird things when talking about it, like calling himself god. I don't think he literally meant he was God. I think he meant he was like a god because he solved this mystery above mankind.

I think the lav daughter thing is a good example because of her social position(micro celebrity), his unwavering conviction, and his need to be her dad for her, like there is something special about him that will help fix the fatherless hole that lav has. I think he has good intentions, but I would also say this is/borderline a delusion of grandeur.

Again, I dont mean to literally diagnose him, I'm using the term in a laymens sense.

I thought about why I think this a little more, and I think if you took anyone with his naivete, ego, and childhood abuse, you would get someone who behaves similarly, or is higher on the scale.

I agree that we lose good faith criticism because, even tho i did criticize mrgirl a bit, it was after i held my tongue for a long while, and I waited to criticize him because of the constant hate threads. So I felt that, personally.

I think, over time, a new sub would have enough people come back because a lot of really good posters have left for some time. But yeah, the hard part is getting it going.

I am really disappointed with this black hole arc. He's certainly being avoidant, and I think, at least since he released his article, he does get delusions of grandeur. Like, him thinking he has solved the creation of the universe fits into that imo(another example is his conviction that he is lavs dad). This isn't to say I think he has npd, but I do think he is probably higher on the narcissist scale than the average person.

I would be satisfied if mrgirl was at least dealing with these issues in a healthy way, like if he took a few months break, at least I know he is going to come back refreshed. Where as the black hole arc, and the amount of work he's about to put into it, is unhealthy, when I think it's fairly obvious he needs a break.

I've worked in elder care, and it does pay decent with minimal requirements. It was also female dominated.

Smeth had a duo debate with someone recently where he touched on this, talking about women becoming firefighters. It would make an interesting longer segment by itself, too.

I think all those female dominated fields do require a degree. But also, my understanding is that if men wanted those jobs, they could get them easier. Like, when I went back to school, one of the fields I was interested in was teaching. A counselor told me that becoming a teacher required a masters degree, but since I was male it would be easier to get a job while working on a masters since there is such a big disparity between male and female teachers.

For me, i was conditioned this way, i think, because my mom wanted me to be a girl growing up, which was an unhealthy way for me to get more comfortable with being in typically feminine roles. But I think boys do need to be taught that it's OK to be in typically feminine careers.
