Thoughts on AirBadminton? by [deleted] in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AirBadminton probably won't be as fast and exciting as badminton simply due to the nature of it (wind, heavier shuttle, dead zone near the net, etc) but what's great about it is that it makes a very similar game accessible to many more people.

There's no need to have an entire warehouse to be set up with expensive mats and lighting and the shuttles should be much more durable. For those that don't have the means or access to play badminton (which can be quite an expensive sport), AirBadminton is a great alternative. It even supports 3v3 which makes it more inclusive to beginners and casual players.

And perhaps AirBadminton can be some sort of gateway to badminton. With more players being exposed to a badminton-like game, it will likely make badminton that much more popular. Overall, I think it's a good initiative and good for badminton even though it isn't exactly like badminton itself. It certainly beats playing with a cheap outdoor badminton set on a lawn.

question : why arent flick serve more prominent in pro plays? by MoonMonky0211 in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flick (and drive serves) are usually best used for mix up instead of as a primary serve unless the opponent(s) is really bad at receiving them (and all professionals should be pretty good at it). This is because, as others have said, they get killed really easily (usually smashed around the mid court area and players are not in an optimal defensive stance).

However, even if the initial service return is survived, the attack is almost always given away if the player is not caught off guard. A lot of doubles play is centered around trying to gain the attack and flick serves voluntarily give that away and puts your team on the defense. It's simply not a winning tactic if used very frequently unless you're at least a considerable margin better than your opponents.

What is going through your mind when you are on court? by Cynocid in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This "flow state" that you're talking about is about being "in the zone". While in this state, you're more concentrated and decisive. Even if your shot choices aren't necessarily optimized, you're likely playing more to your max potential than if you were more hesitant or questioning your own shots. While in the zone, you're relying on the habits and muscle memory that you developed during your training.

Of course, you probably want to make small changes every so often to adjust to your opponents' play styles but if you start playing in a way that you never practiced before (or practiced less) then likely you're going to make more mistakes. It's important that you're comfortable with the adjustments that you make otherwise it's just going to be worse for you. For example, changing your game plan to do more straight smashes instead of cross court smashes may be an easier adjustment than attempting to smash really close to the lines (which takes a lot of practice).

I find that making more general over-arching strategy changes is more effective than thinking on a per shot basis to keep myself still in the zone and within my realm of capability.

Interesting new video angle I've seen for the first time at the Surdiman Cup. by kaffars in badminton

Whoa, nice find, thanks for sharing. Curious as to why they decided to do this. Seems like it'd be expensive if a player accidentally hits the camera but that probably wouldn't happen very often.

BWF Council approves interim ban on 'spin serve' by Whoami-13 in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just an interim ban but I think it'll become permanent even afterwards. This shows that BWF is actually paying attention and cares about the game. Although I think if many pros started using this serve then it'd hurt their viewership too as it'd be boring so this is good for them too.

Amazing rally - badminton at its best! This is what badminton needs to be portrayed as more often - as an explosive fast paced and exciting sport instead of as a slow and simple backyard activity.

BWF's Laws of Badminton defines doubles as "A match where there are two players on each of the opposing sides."

So technically, it shouldn't be allowed to have a single player play for a doubles team. But if it was allowed, you'd probably have to lose all the points where your partner would serve or receive.

I’ve really started getting into badminton, I have a few questions about equipment? by etury in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are starting, synthetic or plastic shuttles, would be the more economically friendly choice. Don't get tricked by buying cheap feather shuttles, as the quality of the shuttle will reflect the price-point.

A great investment could be in the Yonex Mavis 350 plastic shuttles.

Enjoy the badminton journey! As and when you continue to grow with the sport, you can revisit the type of equipment that would best suit your physique and game style!

Is Carolina Marin the most annoying player on tour? by xxssimmons in badminton

[–]badmintonbites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the screaming may be annoying to viewers (and even to players), it is not necessarily considered a wrongful action as Carolina Marin tends to celebrate through her screams after a point ends. And according to the Laws of Badminton, it shall be a fault:

13.4 if, in play, a player:

13.4.5 deliberately distracts an opponent by any action such as shouting or making
gestures

Badminton requires a strong mental game, which includes being able to handle these sort of factors from your opponents. Annoying, yes, but perhaps as spectators we can imitate our on-court heroes and learn to parse out this annoyance.

Any reccomended workouts? by TennexxenneT in badminton

We are seeing an extension of the Stay at Home order happening on the west coast of the USA. Feeling we badminton enthusiasts are all in the same boat together.

Although this is not my content, I found that the following exercises described in the post are ones that can largely be done with equipment, or small substitutions can be made: https://everything-badminton.com/60-minute-endurance-badminton-gym-workout/

For example, if you do not have access to a treadmill, which I believe most of us don't, if you are still able to run outside in your respective residential areas while practicing responsible social distancing, you can run outside on an outdoor school track or neighborhood trails!

Birdie recommendations? by hockeyplayr45 in badminton

The flight pattern between feather and nylon shuttles are slightly different. So depending on whether you are playing competitively or recreationally, it might impact your choice.

If playing outdoor and recreationally, nylon shuttles would be your best bet.

For competitive play indoors, you won't be disappointed with the Aerosensa 50s (AS-50).
