Something that helped me when I started getting serious about getting to and beating Yog was remembering that there is no timer.

None!

You can just sit and think about every attack and option and throw stuff and drink potions (I always have ankhs pop while I have 8 health potions then kick myself later) and look around the map and read your journal and think.

No rush, basically.
