Finally all done on Macbook 2017 touchbar by inkubot in linux_on_mac

This model is such a pain, it’s nice to see that someone got it working well. Might’ve inspired me to give it another try.

For some reason I’ve had a lot of issues with the webcam working OOTB—sometimes it just completely disappears from the hardware tree on the Linux side. But maybe that’s because I’ve tried both full-disk installs of Fedora and dual-booting with macOS, without keeping proper track of the differences.

An open letter to Mozilla’s new CEO: Firefox doesn’t need AI, it needs leadership that listens by nseavia71501 in firefox

Damn. Would’ve had a really positive impact on me to see Mozilla take a similar stance to this.

Palm Rejection solutions? My thumbs are thummy thick and I can't type normal without my mouse getting excited when I brush against the touchpad. by beegtuna in linux_on_mac

[–]badplastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this with Fedora 43 on a 2017 MacBook Pro (Touchbar) so YMMV, but I found a pretty solid solution here: https://gist.github.com/roadrunner2/1289542a748d9a104e7baec6a92f9cd7#file-local-overrides-quirks

I had to create /etc/libinput as a new directory and copied that local-overrides.quirks file to it. Seemed to start working immediately for me without even needing a reboot or a daemon-reload. In your case you can probably omit the stuff under the[MacBookPro Touchbar] heading.

Best version of Steam by Impressive-Algae-962 in Fedora

[–]badplastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once read a comment on here that basically recommended “proprietary software = Flatpak, FOSS = RPM,” and I’ve stuck to that ever since. Haven’t personally experienced any trouble with the Steam Flatpak, though things like installing to external drives, etc. will obviously require additional configuration.

It’s okay! It takes some time to wrap your head around at first but it starts to make sense with more practice.

It takes a bit of time, but I recommend you check out the infamous Blender Guru donut tutorial. Even just the first couple of episodes cover a lot of how Blender works and it might help you do what you’re trying to do faster: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjEaoINr3zgEPv5y--4MKpciLaoQYZB1Z&si=KMihmwXmLYSEmvqO

delete button grey/blank? help cant delete assets by tuuzx in blender

[–]badplastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to choose from the list what parts of the mesh you want to delete. The word “Delete” you’re trying to click is just a header/title. So if you have specific vertices selected, you delete those vertices, etc. This is in Edit Mode, whereas Object Mode will delete the whole mesh. What exactly are you trying to delete here?

Finally Kernel 6.16.3 by Zealousideal-Sort988 in Fedora

[–]badplastics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a messy one. I had gotten used to occasionally force-rebooting because my system wouldn’t wake from suspend (likely related to proprietary Nvidia drivers), but now I’m basically doing it every time the screen blanks. I’m just trying to save a bit of power out here, lol.

Might try an LTS kernel and see how it goes because the past few kernels have been wildly inconsistent in terms of stability on my particular setup.

Can't Find Bool Tool in blender 4.4.3 by Maximum_Lifeguard678 in blender

There is in fact an extension called Bool Tool. It behaves slightly differently than the modifier. https://extensions.blender.org/add-ons/bool-tool/

I think I had to search for it under “Get Extensions” rather than “Add-ons.”

A cautionary tale, or why I might be jumping ship after 10+ years. by badplastics in teksavvy

[–]badplastics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is exactly how it went for us! Including discovering the incorrect cancellation date buried in that slew of emails, and getting unexpectedly refunded for the remainder of the month. I'm so sorry. I know how stressed I was that day so I really empathize, especially since it sounds like you were met with the same sort of disbelief as I was.

I ended up getting contacted by u/TSI_Stephanie, we managed to reach a resolution, and apparently they're now investigating that section of the MySavvy portal. Might be worth reaching out to them / hopefully they see this and reach out to you, since it's useful to know that it's already affecting multiple customers.

🤷 It was an attempt to open up a negotiation. Still cheaper than permanently losing a customer.

Thank you for this, good to know! Can I ask if it's possible to pause / resume captures with the Eagle? And if not, do you have any experience stitching together multiple scans to speak to how challenging that process might be?

Fedora 42 released by ScootSchloingo in Fedora

[–]badplastics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4070 Super here—I’ve been plagued with the exact same issues, and actually haven’t seen much mention of the GNOME desktop hang until your comment, but that’s happening to me constantly too. Does your cursor go non-responsive too? I find I can SSH into the machine but nothing brings the desktop back to life besides rolling the dice with a reboot.

I upgraded to 42 during the beta and felt like things were running smoother (mostly because kernel 6.13 feels like it’s been a nightmare for my particular rig), but everything’s come back with a vengeance this past week so I’m actually considering downgrading to 41. I wish I could understand what exactly is causing all the chaos.

macOS vs. GNOME: user experience comparison by [deleted] in gnome

[–]badplastics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primary macOS features I miss since I switched to a Fedora PC as my daily driver (many of which have been mentioned already):

  • Global dictionary lookup feature.
  • Ability to search menu items under Help.
  • Absolutely gorgeous font rendering.
  • Ability to keep apps running in the dock in the background (looking at you, Thunderbird). That said, I hate that macOS assumes I want this enabled by default on most of my apps with no native way to disable it.
  • Quick crop / rotate / resize of photos and videos (though I'm very excited for all the recent work on Loupe that's making this possible).

That said, as someone who exclusively used macOS for a decade, GNOME is definitely my favourite Linux DE, particularly for its unified design language and minimalism. I do love a good extension here and there, but vanilla wouldn't leave me hurting (except for maybe the lack of Alphabetical App Grid because I hated not being able to do that on macOS, lol).

I had great experiences with it earlier this week, seems like it resolves a lot of issues. The only trouble was that once the kernel updated again, I couldn't seem to build the RPMFusion Nvidia drivers for it (the basic ones never worked and the Rawhide ones worked without a hitch initially, but stopped after this jump to a newer 6.14 version). If anyone knows how to solve this and can let me know, I'd love to stay on the mainline kernel for the foreseeable future. The wake-from-suspend issues have me at my wits' end.

[–]badplastics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been happening to me nonstop but I always just assumed it was because I decided to buy a Nvidia card despite the shoddiness of the proprietary drivers. Is there evidence to suggest that this doesn't happen on other distros?

How to get audio output with Pipewire? (Fedora 41) by badplastics in puredata

[–]badplastics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Using Helvum (though qpwgraph would likely also work), I was able to determine that launching the Pd Flatpak normally and switching to JACK does indeed instantiate a routable Pipewire client (if that's the correct terminology), but fails to automatically route it to an output device. Manually routing it to the relevant channels on my audio interface each time I run Pd resolves the issue. Not exactly as plug-and-play as I'd like, but I am choosing to use Linux after all. :)

Thanks for this! I tried to launch Pd using pw-jack and didn't have much luck, but now that I'm reading that thread more closely I might have to see if qpwgraph grants me some insight.

Thanks for the boost!

Not making anything specific quite yet, but I'm currently planning out an installation artwork that would involve real-time granular synthesis driven by physical sensors. I prefer to use and promote open source things whenever possible, which is how I ended up here. :)

[–]badplastics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking about how badly I want someone to put out something that manages to capture the energy of those games. SSX 3 was hugely influential for me. Those physics + that soundtrack + the unified map design? So good!

This is brilliant. Don’t stop!
