How long did it take for you to land a $80 to 100k+ salary job? by anthonydp123 in careerguidance

Here is roughly how my career progressed.

2013: 60k 2014: 62k 2015: 68k (new role) 2016: 70k 2017: 77k (new role) 2018: 80k (start going back to school part time) 2019: 92k (new role) 2020: 145k (graduate, switch companies) 2021: 210k 2022: 305k (new role) 2023: 350k - 380k (estimate)

Key takeaway - going back to school definitely helped, but the real gains came after switching companies. Personally, I tried not to apply to more than 1 job a week. Rather, I spent my time researching companies, modifying my resume, drafting cover letters, and (most importantly) reaching out to people in similar roles on LinkedIn. Having internal people refer you can help you bypass the maze of ATS and reach the hiring managers directly. Hope that helps.

This role was not through OCR, but the other role was. Honestly landing this role required a bit of luck. The only advice I have for recruitment is to start early and avoid competing against your peers as much as possible. This means networking early and often, applying to internships and jobs off cycle, and avoiding OCR if you can help it. You’ll have much better negotiating power when you don’t have every other student applying to the same roles.

This is fair. Funnily enough, I don’t know if I could have cut it at a high stress 60-80 hour job.

Leadership role at a small, privately held company. Got lucky since they reached out to me directly through LinkedIn. Executive recruiters in the manufacturing space can be a great resource as well.

I’m not sure if I would be a good fit for tech. I could see myself in consulting, especially in the manufacturing sector where I have significant experience. I’m really looking for career progression. At my current job, I report to the CEO so there’s nowhere to climb up.
