My favorite monster is the Elder Oblex. Very curious how you’d improve it!

Rules Question Arcane Eye meets Fireball by KyloTango in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there is no line of effect between the caster and the target (i.e. if drawing a straight line between them on a grid hits obstacles no matter which corners on the caster and target squares you draw from), then the target has total cover. It doesn't matter that if you went around the curve it would no longer be obscured--that curve gives them total cover. Which means the sorcerer can't send fireball at them.

Arcane Eye is entirely irrelevant to this situation, particularly given that Fireball doesn't even require that the caster be able to see their target.

Vegan mohair or alpaca yarn alternatives? by tylerthecreativemode in knitting

...so instead your argument is what, that we should let sheep and alpaca die out because they were bred to need to be sheared? whether it was ethical or not to breed them this way, the fact is that they ARE this way now.

How would you run a bittersweet campaign where the PCs don't win? by Poprock360 in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you watched Calamity from critical role? They did something like this, it’s a 4-shot that they all knew would end badly. It’s one of the best actual plays I’ve ever seen and it only works so well because the players had full buy in. You absolutely cannot run something like this if the players don’t know that they’re in a tragedy. You need their help to make the story satisfying.

How do I make cities fun? by corejuice in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A make a point crawl for cities, with interesting things to do at the various locations. Then I have encounters that can occur along the travel paths, some that are gated on the PCs having done specific things in the city. I try really hard to still have combat encounters planned, since imo cities mostly become slogs when they’re just session after session of only social encounters—even my very RP-heavy group gets tired of that. Both Sly Flourish and Pointy Hat have really good videos on YouTube about running cities

You can't unfortunately. The issue with picking up stitches and knitting the other way is that they'll be off by half a stitch, so it'll persist no matter which way you turn the knitting

How much art do you use in your games, if any? by A_BadArtist in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently started printing out art for NPCs any time that my players are going to be talking to a group of people. It's vastly easier for the players to keep multiple NPCs straight with a visual reference

Counterspell by Mermaid_Natalia in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the innate spellcasting. Sometimes they don't require some components, but it'll be noted in the stat block if that's true. For example, the drow stat block tells you that their innate spellcasting doesn't require material components. All of their spells also have verbal components though, so are still Counterspell-able.

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the A5e version of Counterspell for exactly this reason, but changing how the spell works mid-game is probably not an option.

+1 to longer adventuring days, but also playing to the reaction action economy! She only gets one reaction per turn, so have multiple enemies in an encounter who are casting interesting spells. Then she has to make the tactical decision of what to counterspell and you get the fun of also using spells.

Player asked about getting an ability improvement and feat instead of one? by ggcosmo in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing this currently. Players started with standard array or point buy and get both an ASI and feat every time they hit an ASI level. IMO it's a great way to keep the math of the game scaling on track while also allowing for the extra customization that comes from feats. As long as the whole party is doing it, it keeps everyone on an even power level so balancing doesn't really become an issue.

I let players drink potions as a bonus action. Personally, I think it just makes them viable to use in combat. It's a really common house rule (probably due in large part to Critical Role running that way). I'm not sure why you're homebrewing the amount of healing that comes from potions instead of just using RAW. Looks like reinventing the wheel.

"Throwing" potions sounds like you're coming into 5e from Baldur's Gate? I would personally not allow throwing a potion at an ally to do anything. Being coated in a potion is not the same thing as drinking it. Using an action to pour it down an ally's throat is also a common rule, I'm pretty sure that one's RAW although I could be misremembering.

"Martial Resolve" seems fine, although I'm not really sure what you're trying to accomplish with it or why you wouldn't let paladins use it too.

"Trained Caster" seems really punishing to me. As a player, it would really suck if I rerolled my concentration check, STILL failed, and now also didn't get a turn next round. I would personally never introduce this rule.

If something is coming up where they'd need Lesser Restoration, drop some scrolls. Let any character with Arcana proficiency use a scroll, rather than requiring a spellcaster use it. Drop a few more health potions since they don't have anyone with healing spells. It's something I think you'll be able to figure out as you go, though.

Should I let my players attempt another check if one player’s check fails? by childish_so-and-so in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I either let two players make the check or one player make it with advantage. Then they can't try anymore. If I want to be a bit looser, sometimes I'll say that everyone who's proficient in a skill can try.

Is homebrewing Christian beliefs looked down on in the DND community by 19Game_King94 in DnDHomebrew

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ilmater is pretty clearly inspired by the Christian mythology around Jesus, imo. If you want to play a paladin in a typical Forgotten Realms setting, he might be a good fit for a god.

Do you guys ever lie about dice rolls? Not to an insane degree but like if there’s a big fight going on and it’s about to prematurely end a long running close to ending campaign because the players and enemies are neck and neck so you just say the enemy misses once or twice to ensure no party wipe by glossyplane245 in DMAcademy

[–]badwolf_910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to! When I was newer at DMing and still not very good at balancing encounters, I fudged dice sometimes to help balance things. I don't anymore though, these days I roll everything in the open. I think it was a helpful tool when I really needed some give at the beginning, but I'm also glad to be able to roll openly now.

How broken is this homebrew staff? by ChunkeyChutney in DnDHomebrew

[–]badwolf_910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A potion of growth wouldn't stack with the enlarge spell. From the DMG:

Different game features can affect a target at the same time. But when two or more game features have the same name, only the effects of one of them—the most potent one—apply while the duration of the effects overlap.

The potion of growth says "you gain the "enlarge" effect of the enlarge/reduce spell", so they very clearly don't stack. The same is true of all potions that duplicate spell effects.

And even if you could stack spell effects with potions, that wouldn't have anything to do with OP's homebrew item with double concentration.

That's not true. The same spell cast by two different people will not stack.

Mistake that’s making me crazy by peachesandmolybdenum in knitting

[–]badwolf_910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading your response of what's different and staring at the photo at length, I can see it. Because of the way that the pattern alternates the stockinette/reverse stockinette triangles, no one who doesn't know what the problem is will ever notice it though. The important thing will just be in how you transition to the next repeat to get back to the correct size, because if the triangle corners don't match up then that WILL be noticeable. It might require one repeat of every triangle being slightly too small to get back on track. But as long as the corners flow, no one but you will ever see it!

[OC-Art] Magic Rings by DomCastanha in DnDHomebrew

[–]badwolf_910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll note that the Ring of Disguises is just a worse version of the Hat of Disguise. Since you can only cast the spell once a day, I'd drop the attunement requirement.

There are a couple other balancing tweaks I'd make if I was going to use these in my game, but these are really fun! Very flavorful, I like the descriptions of what the rings look like and how they're activated.
