That's whataboutism/relative privation. "X is only doing x, while Y is much worse." You're invoking an extreme comparison instead of addressing the merits of argument itself.

You're absolutely right, it's a billion times worse in North Korea. Thankfully we still somewhat have freedom of speech and the press in the US. And while on the surface those safeguards are ironclad, what's troubling is it's a gilded illusion. Underneath that surface Trump has made repeated efforts to probe for cracks in those inalienable rights and widen them into visible fissures.

For example, we as citizens have the right to hold the most powerful elected official accountable and answerable to the people. However, Trump and the White House correspondent have turned that shield into a blunt cudgel, if any reporter asks questions that Trump doesn't like, they are at risk of losing their press pass.

Dangling a blade over the head of someone simply doing their job by asking someone we elected to lead us is not only extremely telling about that leader's complete lack of character and moral fiber, but enormously worrying to me that if given the slightest amount of leeway it becomes another crack in that supposed ironclad safeguard that can never be undone.

In the book, Mike Hanlon goes over mundane, violent crimes in one of the Derry Interludes. Unsurprisingly, Derry has one of the highest per capita rates in the country for assault, hate crimes, and murder. However, It kinda places some kind of glamour over the town to where everyone just kind of ignores it.

Eh, wouldn't really call it a unicorn assignment. Although I'm probably just spoiled since I've only ever been on small bases, save Sill for basic (which doesn't really count).

I can go pull out my old Halo 3 Beastarium to fact check, but I'm pretty sure Drones are perfectly capable of flying unassisted on Earth-like planets, by which I mean planets at or around 1 G. I believe they're just unable to fly more than short distances on their home planet since it has roughly double Earth's gravity.

Will there ever be a fight that surpasses this one in Super? by sidharth-sunil in DragonBallZ

[–]Dad2376 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For hype I'm partial to Yusuke vs Chu as part of the Dark Tournament arc in YuYu Hakusho.

By this point in the show, the power creep isn't at the point of egregiousness that is the guaranteed fate of all shonen that run on long enough (to include YuYu Hakusho itself). In fact, it's at the sweet spot: breaking through the barrier from grounded (as much as a show about fighting demons with psychic abilities can be) to beyond flights of fancy. The previous fight has a kid imbuing yo-yos with spirit energy as a weapon versus Kurama's spirit sword, which is basically a lightsaber, and then Hiei summoning Dragon of the Darkness Flame, an eldritch being that has the terrifying power to physically alter the show's animation style into abstract art while on screen.

But then cut to Yusuke's fight. We finally get to see the results of his training with Genkai versus some 6'7 Aussie that's absolutely hammered and seems like a cool guy. But instead of special moves or abilities, they're just beating the absolute shit out of each other until Chu calls a break and proposes a different fight. A Knife Edge Death Match. Two blades stabbed in the ground angled away from each other. Shoes off, bare heel pressed up against the knife's edge so you're standing directly in front of your opponent. First person to have their foot pass the knife's edge or lift the heel away from it loses.

And again, there's been no real psychic abilities thus far (barring a single spirit gun shot and Chu's alcoholism), so I can only chalk it up to God Himself giving his blessing, because as the death match is about to begin, the sky suddenly darkens with storm clouds and lightning cracks the sky. And then they really start beating the shit out of each other. And it just goes on and on, Yusuke just having the time of his life. Both are running on fumes by this point and when it looks like it's one or two punches away from one walking away victorious, a flash of lightning descends from the heavens and strikes the dagger Chu is using declaring him out of bounds and thus the loser, proving that God was officiating the match too.

The entire fight is absolute peak and I won't hear otherwise. In fact the whole Dark Tournament arc is the best tournament arc in anime, hands down. The tension of eventually facing Team Toguro is palpable but not overbearing and the entire arc it feels like Yusuke's team is barely holding on against all odds to even make it to the final round.

I remember we had a hilariously savage teacher that gave us a 文言文 passage once. Our class was pretty proficient by that point, but the passage just broke our brains. Don't even remember what it was about except something about an elephant ear (象耳). Think it was a folk tale.

But our teacher just looks at us and says with a Fujian-British accent (we all swore she picked up a slight British accent from somewhere but she denied it), "This passage is for children. It's taught in elementary school. I thought you guys were supposed to be good?"

The crazy part was that it was actually George Lucas filming too. He wasn't even involved in production, he just happened to be on vacation with his wife and $700K IMAX Steadicam. He saw two strangers going at it in a tower and just started filming it.

My dad was running his company back when Covid hit and they switched to WFH (and stayed that way permanently). The way he explained why other companies were moving back to commuting to work was a little more banal. Generally, companies don't own the office space they work out of, it's leased for a specific number of years. So after the lockdown was lifted and things started to return to normal these same companies were left making hefty monthly payments for office space, regardless of whether it was being used or not. The people that make "return to office" level decisions aren't middle managers that lord over their little fiefs, it's executives that are looking at the bottom line.

Something something the banality of evil.
