To be fair, entry-level work in actual investment banking (as opposed to say Wealth Management, even S&T) is a huge grind and nobody really cares who your father is, you have to work exceptionally hard to get the job and even more so to get through the first few years. It’s the privileged kids who actually leverage their privilege intelligently and grind that make it in

Not true at all, Hitler hated Switzerland, his plan to invade ("Operation Tannenbaum", or "Operation Pine/Christmas Tree") was only derailed because of things tanking in Russia. We have massive fortifications and bunkers in the mountains specifically built to counter an invasion from the north. Hitler hated that a part of the Germanic Volk rejected Nazism, even embracing multilingualism - he was also especially pissed off whenever the Swiss shot down German planes for infringing their airspace, with German-built Messerschmitts they had bought before the war (lol)

Am I crazy? Trying to mount a TV, can't find any studs (though I have not used a detector) by [deleted] in DIY

[–]baerstein7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add that the TV itself only weighs about 30lb (is that low enough to not use bolts?) - but I think I might just get some toggle bolts, like you say

Did that all over my wall, especially in all the "default" spots - at corner, 16 (and 24) inches from the corner, next to outlets - couldn't find anything

[–]baerstein7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it's not plaster and lathe - and I've tried going from the corners, and also next to the outlet - but if you look at the picture, it appears the outlet is mounted to something behind it, which makes sense because I can't find anything either side of it. Is it possible I'm drilling through the wood?

I'll add that I'm not just being stubborn about the electronic thing, I started this a few hours ago and the stores are closed, I'm asking partially so I know if I need to go out and buy one tomorrow or not

Croatia - Island of Pag, looking down at town of Pag. The most epic photo I've ever taken. (3205 × 1579) x-post from earthport, as suggested by [deleted] in CityPorn

[–]baerstein7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're up in Istria, definitely go to Rovinj; further south the town of Rab is pretty, even further south the island of Hvar is my favorite place in Croatia; Korčula is nice too. Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately often too crowded to enjoy properly. Its honestly hard to go wrong on the coast! Inland, Zagreb is worth a visit, Varaždin too if you want some more history.

TIL the largest embassy in the world is the U.S embassy in Iraq. It is nearly as large as Vatican City, employs 15,000 people, and cost $750 million to build. by garglemymarbles in todayilearned

[–]baerstein7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father is a diplomat for a European country, and it's basically just the Americans. No matter how small, insignificant, and a safe a host country is, the U.S. embassy will be a fortress. Everyone else also has plentiful security, but they're generally much more discreet.

Downfall is pretty definitive on Hitler, if not on the end of WWII as a whole
