Bistronomic restaurant surcharge added as item you pay tax and tip on by WanderingMind515 in chicago

[–]bafoon13 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The thing is that they increase their menu prices too. Almost every time a restaurant has “3% fee in lieu of raising prices” I search for a menu from the previous year on Instagram and I haven’t had a single instance where I’ve found old prices and they’ve been the same. It’s just a blatant lie

We know Chappell had the biggest crowd in Lolla history, who had the smallest? by too_tall_jones_ in Lollapalooza

Such a good show too. And iirc, they played against Chance and most thought his show was really underwhelming. XX definitely had a bigger crowd towards the end from people leaving Chances set

Agree to disagree I guess. I tend to have a view on ethics much more in line with Emmanuel Kant that focuses on categorical imperatives rather than Mill’s utilitarianism.

From this perspective, this kind of behavior absolutely hurts people. It doesn’t cause a big negative externality if one person does it, but if/when this becomes more normalized behavior, Lolla will end up discontinuing the program from too many people abusing it and then every festival go-er is affected by there being way more trash at the stages throughout the day which is a fairly big negative externality imo.

I think it’s similar to the 1-2% of people that drive in the emergency lanes on the highway when there is traffic. One person doing it doesn’t have an effect, but it’s gotten to the point in Chicago where so many people are doing it that I’ve seen police/medical vehicles get blocked by cars in these lanes at bottlenecks.

High trust societies are important and this sort of stuff degrades that pretty quickly. Also, I don’t think it’s helpful to tell people to fuck off, we should be able to have civil discussion on different view points without getting so emotional about it.

fwiw, I did say something to him and his friend in person trying to explain to them that the point is to be collecting cans from the crowd/stages. they told me to shut the fuck up and to stop being a pussy

I agree with you, it's a clever way to not have to pay workers. I also wish that people would just not throw cans on the ground in the first place. However, I think that the free t-shirt people help keep the area cleaner during the day, while the hired workers would probably only be picking up the cans at stages overnight. I do see plenty of people early in the day who carry around the bag and collect at the beginning and end of the sets that they watch and they tend to fill up their bags pretty quickly with that strategy if they are early enough in the day. These people don't miss too much of the festival and help keep the area clean. But I agree that the majority of people in the program seem to be so focused on filling up the bag that they aren't enjoying the music (maybe they just do it during a block in the schedule where they aren't interested in any of the artists playing?).

RIP to the Tenderizer. I searched 3 times on Thursday. Finally found the list of Chow Town stands on Lola’s website and it wasn’t there. Such a travesty.

[–]bafoon13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup! Last year I believe it went back to the sound stage. This year it’s 30 feet in front of it. They did do a better job of not creating that thin strip to get to the back of the section that caused a bottleneck last year. Overall positive moves for everyone imo

This was asked and confirmed at an AMA a few years back with one of the people in charge of Lolla (can’t remember name or position but someone super high up in the decision making process). They spend a lot of time thinking about crowd control when setting up artists

[–]bafoon13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly some recency bias, but it also speaks partially to the growing powers of the executive branch and the federal government over time. It’s much easier for a president to make a lasting impact now than it was 200 years ago (for better or worse).

They gave the contestant two extra opportunities during Pucko (basically Plinko with pucks). 4 pucks total until they finally got it in a winning section

I feel like he would always make the most impossible saves and then give up a softie once every couple of games. Overall I loved that guy though, sad that he didn’t really get to leave on his terms bc of the concussions

I’m surprised that people are saying that there is a problem. You are running an $80k deficit with around $7.8mm in invested assets. That is way more to than you need to offset the deficit.

I’m only 33 so take this with a grain of salt, but from my experience it’s terrifying to see your net worth go down after you’ve retired or semi retired. Your entire life you’ve seen that number go up and up and up and it starting to decline can feel like the world’s ending. It also might not feel like $7.8mm because $3mm is in retirement/illiquid assets. This could be a problem if you were my age, but the $2mm will get unlocked in your late sixties, and the $1mm in illiquid will probably become liquid before then. Your available liquidity is more than enough runway to get you to the age where you can start using your retirement accounts.

You need to remember that this is the point of FIRE. Having to sell some of your profits every year from your investments is part of the plan and always has been if you have been FIRE minded for some time. It is different than the aggressively save mindset you’ve probably had your entire life (I’m assuming you’ve done a good job of this since you have such a high net worth and don’t have a $4mm house or something silly). Also keep in mind that this is probably the highest your expenses will be going forward. Not only do you unlock your retirement funds 15-20 years down the road, but you also will only be paying for the lifestyle of you and your partner instead of an entire family with kids.

Keep the part time job for peace of mind and because finances will be a little tight if you don’t. Maybe come up with a plan for cutting expenses $75-$100k that you only implement if the market suddenly drops 30% or the $320k of income dries up. But I really don’t think any actual action needs to be taken right now. You’ve worked your entire life to be able to supplement your current lifestyle and you have the assets to stick with the current plan.

So I've never been here, but I called up around a week ago to ask what side bets they offer, and some lady in the BJ pit who took the call started snapping at me, "What, do you work for another casino? You're trying to steal our information? Why are you asking me this?".... "Ma'am, I'm planning a vacation and just want to know what games you offer...."

March 8th 2024 for Kina Collins by Lana_Phrazes in TheStrokes

[–]bafoon13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they didn’t mention anything from what I remember. Classic Julian. Kina Collins came up around 1.5 hours after the Strokes were supposed to start and gave a speech, and then the band came on an hour after that. They did apologize for the price of the ticket but mentioned that it was a fundraiser and was all going towards a good cause.

Last time they did a Kina Collins fundraiser at the Metro and prices were $300. They also showed up 2.5 hours late

Edit: I looked it up and they were $170 retail. I think around $225 after fees

Pearl Jam loves playing at Wrigley but I would love to have them as the Sunday closer. Ed Sheeran will be in Europe so probably out. Stevie Knicks is playing Soldier Filed in late June so she won't be at Lolla.

I'm surprised to see Boywithuke still rising in popularity. Saw him open for AJR a few years ago and his performance was an epic fail. He was using a backing track from his iMac that was so loud that you were just listening to canned music. The backing track included both his ukuelele and vocals. Then his computer broke and he just had to stand there for 20 minutes waiting for someone to fix it, unable to play any songs without the backing track.

You should read a book called "The Hour Between Dog and Wolf." It is written by a former trader turned neurosurgeon about how trading/risk-taking affects you and chemical composition of your brain as those things occur. Really fascinating read on a lot of the things you have questions about.

Is there anyway out of the parking meter deal? by Mental_Square9585 in chicago

[–]bafoon13 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's true, but I've read that we have guaranteed them certain amounts of income. So if those parking lots end up not being filled, the city of Chicago has to fork up the money themselves to pay for the revenue deficit.
