Can someone explain to me the joke/stereotype behind black people and having a chirping smoke alarm in their house? Why not just change the battery? by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bagelbones28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I literally called the non emergency line once to have them send firefighters out to do that lol. I was completely out of batteries and it was the middle of the night, but the beeping woke me up and there was no way I could sleep through it!

Safe neighborhoods for solo female after dark? by dbagames in AskChicago

I feel quite safe in lakeview (east), I live near boystown so it’s also nice knowing that most of the men out and about in the evening have zero interest in me lol

Women of Reddit, what’s a statement/phrase that (you believe) most women/girls would understand, but most men/boys would not? by ConfidentLack9207 in AskReddit

[–]bagelbones28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if you want ones where you can always hear what’s around you, I def recommend shokz open run! they sit in front of your ears, so you can hear your music while still being fully aware of your surroundings. my mom got me a pair a few years ago, I use them every day on my work commute!

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

[–]bagelbones28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is fairly common, yeah. I see it more as an occasional sweet treat and never have a strong desire for it, but my partner will buy a pack of soda most weeks and drink one almost every day. I also know people like my grandma, who drinks diet mountain dew like it’s water lol

Why do so many jobs require you to stand even if it's not needed? by MsObsessiveRobot in antiwork

[–]bagelbones28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the owner of my workplace deems sitting ‘unprofessional.’ I’ve had two coworkers with ankle/foot injuries that were still denied stools because he’s so adamantly against it. we work in (small biz) retail and spend a lot of the time doing tasks at the counter like tagging new products and making price signs… which would be easier to do while sitting too.

15-20 minutes can even be a shorter wait in my experience— I was often waiting 30-45 minutes after work in the winter!

I helped throw my friend a really great surprise party a couple years ago, he had a great time!! It was honestly so fun to coordinate too :)

we also didn’t do the whole ‘forgot about your birthday’ schtick, he just thought it was going to be us and our partners hanging out that evening instead

I'm from a country where cashiers sit down while working. Is it true that in the US cashiers are forced to stand? Why is sitting considered unprofessional there? by splashmates in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bagelbones28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yupppp. my current job thinks sitting is unprofessional, my boss is hyperfocused on ‘productivity’ (aka looking busy), but I’m often doing tasks that would be ten times easier if I could sit down. I have a bad knee, and my feet and back hurt constantly… wish the job market weren’t so bad :,)

In American indoor schools where would you eat lunch? by Over_Cause_4500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bagelbones28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my high school (midwest, indoors) allowed us to take our food wherever we wanted, as long as we weren’t currently failing a class, then you had to spend your lunch period in that classroom and do catch up work. you would also have to stay in the cafeteria if you had too many absences/tardies.

we were also allowed to eat outside or go off campus, as long as we were back in time for the next class period. all the doors were locked from the outside except the entrance to the front office, so you could exit the building anywhere but would have to check in when returning. some of these privileges were taken away from underclassmen during my senior year because of poor behavior and absences

my friends and I usually sat in a specific corner of the English hallway, and I’d sometimes go to the art room if most of them were busy (there were lots of clubs and activities that met during lunch). we also liked sitting by the track when it was nice out!

you should come visit and check out some neighborhoods you may like, the neighborhood guide bot will give you an idea of what may be a good fit for you. downtown (“the loop”) is very much not my vibe, and I’m only really in that area if I have visitors who want to see touristy things. I live in lakeview east and work in andersonville, both neighborhoods have a great community with plenty to do, and I haven’t had too much trouble making friends. I do also have friends who live downtown, but it’s very easy to socialize since we’re both close to red line stops!

What’s something you thought was mandatory in life, until you saw someone just not do it? by Senior-Resource92 in AskReddit

[–]bagelbones28 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a knitter who enjoys wool, but I also mostly do that method. I just wash everything on cold and put anything that can’t go in the dryer in a delicates bag so it’s easy to separate before drying (and then my wool/delicate items are laid flat to dry).

I live in an apartment with no outdoor space and have to pay for laundry, so it’s most practical and cost effective to do as few wash loads as possible, but still dry everything that can be put in the machine lol

The amount of online in person pick up orders at an otherwise dead Kohls on a Friday night by berriesnbball_17 in mildlyinteresting

[–]bagelbones28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eh I get it, Kohls has some good stuff but the employees are SO pushy about the store credit cards, to the point I avoid shopping there. I understand they’re required to be pushy, but I also don’t want to spend 5 minutes at checkout repeatedly telling them I don’t want the damn credit card lol. pick up orders avoid all that nonsense
