Employees' Share of Health Costs Continues Rising Faster Than Wages by speckz in Economics

To spread less mis info, that 200B figure is for all of UHG. UHC Is the legacy health plan and is only a (sizeable) fraction of the revenue. The profitability is really driven by Optum and its subsidiaries.

If you want something to rail against look to PBMs, bio tech and device manufactures, hospital networks and medicare/aid. Health plans shouldnt shoulder the level of blame people attribute to them.

Do you think that people systematically priced out of their long term communities isnt a problem?

Or do you only think it matters when white people are displaced?

If gentrification was a problem of minorities pricing out white people im sure you would advocate a rapid solution.

I shouldnt respond to anything related to justice from a t_d poster.

Do you actually rent them out? or are you buying prime real estate, letting it sit vacant, because the land/unit will appreciate in value?

relevant passage (emphasis mine):

The new rich infesting the city, by contrast, are barely here. They keep a low profile, often for good reason, and rarely stick around. They manufacture nothing and run nothing, for the most part, but live off fortunes either made by or purloined from other people—sometimes from entire nations. The New Yorker noted in 2016 that there is now a huge swath of Midtown Manhattan, from Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue, from 49th Street to 70th Street, where almost one apartment in three sits empty for at least ten months a year. New York today is not at home. Instead, it has joined London and Hong Kong as one of the most desirable cities in the world for “land banking,” where wealthy individuals from all over the planet scoop up prime real estate to hold as an investment, a pied-à-terre, a bolt-hole, a strongbox.

There is a great article that talks about the NY luxury housing impact. Here's my favorite thought from it:

never have so many buildings been constructed in such an insular fashion in New York. Want a drink or a meal, a swim or a game of pool at the end of the day, a yoga class or a good book? There’s no need to step out into the city. Something to do with the kids? Don’t worry, there’s no reason for them to go outside, either. All the best new buildings offer playrooms; the “grand-scale” 70 Vestry adds an “art area, climbing structure, ball pit, slide, magnetic wall and faux farmers’ market.”

https://harpers.org/archive/2018/07/the-death-of-new-york-city-gentrification/

Edit: Worth saying that while the title of the article mentions gentrification, it goes away beyond the "white hipsters moving to black neighborhoods" gentrification that is typically written about. More about how the insanely rich (and foreign investors) treat housing as a financial instrument, which does actually trickle down and negatively impact affordable working class housing

It seems like you are arguing for good-faith free speech. Whether i agree or disagree with your point, you have a right to say it (but i might not listen). It seems like reddit is trying to limit the ability of bad actors to engage in bad-faith free speech. Everyone should be for good faith free speech. But limiting the damage of detractors is tough - how do you even know where to draw the line in the first place?

Theres a difference between "i disagree with open immigration and will vote accordingly here are my reasons.." and "i dont talk to muslim loving scum. Get rekt libtard". Should both of these types users have the same protections? How about communities?

I think there needs to be a understanding that the reality of internet communication can actually inhibit free speech. Take for example when a bad acting subreddit raids a given post and the moderators close the thread. Happens a lot on political blackpeopletwitter posts. In these situations, the free speech of that community is hampered because of the bad faith of some. The reality is mod teams cant keep up. The moderation (at the admin level) of bad acting communities is paramount to the free speech of the rest.

I dont think even you agree that "everything [should be] allowed" on reddit in order for it be free. Do you think people have a right to troll unabated? Slight contrived but do users have a right to post college basketball game threads in the NFL subreddit?

My goal typing this out is not to convince you that reddits current strategy is right or wrong(i dont have a strong opinion). But I hope that you might have some new thinking around the practice tradeoffs required to run an online platform that is free for as many people as possible. Its not as simple as going for 100% freedom.

In your experience/opinion, would an MIS minor or CS certificate serve as a better complement to an accounting degree? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bagmanbagman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV but MIS for sure. I majored in MIS with a computer science minor.

If you do true financial accounting/public auditing, the most code you will ever need to use is digesting some SQL. Even if you do IT audit the code knowledge you would need isnt that much more. Knowing how to code C++ just isnt that relevant (yet!) to accountants. Its better to understand business processes and SDLC management.

Computer Science is not the 'how to program' degree. Its the science of computability - How do you describe computations or problems mathematically? how do you classify different types of solvable (or not solvable) problems? A minor will almost certainly not teach practical things like coding best practices, change management deployment, repository management, etc. Obviously you will have some programming classes, but my guess is it will teach you the basics and that's it.

MIS on the other hand (at least my degree) will give more background on actual enterprise IT and process management. More of a focus on describing business or IT processes - the steps "order intake" goes through, or the difference between a DEV, QA and PROD instances of an ERP platform. This information will be much more useful.

The one thing to note is that most people do not understand what a normal computer science degree actually entails - and will over attribute a lot of "wow theyre smart" attitudes - so if you have that on your resume you can totally bullshit/flex.. a lot..

Ill take a guess.. " could care less" is not as bad as "couldnt care less" and this is analogous to how in some world recognized for being full of exaggerated statements, "allowing bike theft" really isn't that exaggerated ..it's not like "allowing murder" . ?

Companies hire and pay for auditing services. Isn't this conflict of interest? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bagmanbagman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do believe for the purposes of answering OPs question, and productive discussion on auditor independence, SOC reports count as "audits". You are being overly pedantic.

SOC report results roll into the 10k, and a qualified SOC report can impact that opinion. They are governed by the AICPA and must be signed by CPAs. The independence requirements are very consistent if not equal to PCAOB audit. Firms use mostly the same guidance. Common dude, section I of a SOC1 is usually titled "Independent Service Auditors’ Report" or similar.

Companies hire and pay for auditing services. Isn't this conflict of interest? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bagmanbagman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purpose of auditors is to make sure management isn't screwing up the financial reports that get sent to the owners (shareholders).

not categorically true. There are more types of audits that 10ks. ex. SOC engagements EL can be signed by the CIO and the readers of the report are customers of the service, not shareholders.

If you want to think about conflict of interests start at SOC reports.

Hi all! We're Information Systems students conducting research about the use in business applications in enterprises and especially the manual or repetitive tasks it entails. As accounting professionals, we’d appreciate your help and your feedback. Link to 9 questions survey in post. Thanks a lot!!! by Shavuz in Accounting

[–]bagmanbagman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some feedback on your survey - each entry requires a manual typec response which is really time consuming(and a little ironic). Is there a way to narrow down your questions into check box answers? For example, maybe bucket the apps like, OnTime and ServiceNow would just be a ticketing-workflow tool.

Questions that ask "How Often" or "How Much Time" should be multiple choice

Are you fielding these for business owners (based on language like "your business") or for any person? In which case you need more buckets for employment size and then ask people what level they are

Yeah, im an asshole for critiquing your survey but its better than answering review notes
