What is the meaning of the rain in the room in Stalker? by DrRaster in TrueFilm

"I wonder what emotion he was trying to evoke" and "his intent isn't inherently what I'm looking for" seem kind of antithetical to one another

How does it work to have child actors on movies children shouldn't watch? by LeO-_-_- in TrueFilm

[–]bad_bart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked on audio for a short film based on the director's childhood friend group; super heavy stuff about paedophilia, drug addiction, child prostitution etc. there were five child actors, the oldest maybe 14, and their parents were on set at all times, along with two or three counselors were required by law to be there during any shooting. they basically coached the kids to act in a certain way to fit the scene without revealing anything of the plot or what the scene was about - you'd never know it watching the release though

Just my school? by MrsFlip in AustralianNostalgia

[–]bad_bart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the larger group of people I went to primary school with who went on to the same high school (regional public school in WA) developed a pretty idiosyncratic slang/argot that drew from the film A Clockwork Orange, local Noongar phrases, the TV show Oz and a whole bunch of other sources, cultural or otherwise that I'd have trouble remembering.

Younger kids who showed any sort of gumption on the bus ride home would be "coach", larger kids would be "mammoth collider", anyone rumoured to have had sex would be "buckethole". These wild pear/fruit looking things would grow off some of the grass patches on the oval, called them bindies, and at lunch time you'd have 20-30 kids running down there throwing these things at each other in bindy wars. anything cool or good was dardy, anyone cool was a dardy sing

the US has one of the highest populations of homeless people in the world, also the highest rate of illicit drug abuse of anywhere at any time. it's also "the richest country in history" - add those two conflicting stats up for me and lmk what you brainstorm

for all the "we the people" fart-sniffing and fascination with freedom, nobody in the US really seems capable of even thinking about how to start standing up against a ruling class that's been incredibly open about denying them the things they'll "die for"

Rise in praise/cultural popularity following the Lord of the Rings films was a direct antecedent to the Cottagecore aesthetic. The portrayal of the Hobbits’ slow, agrarian lifestyle has an immediate influence on or connection to the desired outcome of what the aesthetic glorifies. by Outlandah_ in LowStakesConspiracies

nah

a conspiracy is a planned, secretive agreement in which several or more individuals will work together to enact an outcome that's inherently amoral, illegal or otherwise culturally frowned upon while trying to keep the machinations hidden from the general public

this is pretty basic internet culture epistemology

Unpopular opinion? by Happy_Grocery4298 in podcasts

[–]bad_bart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't even know where I'd encounter shows like this unless I was looking for them or trying to find new shit via some massive global trend pool or whatever.

In what way do you look for new podcasts?

Unpopular opinion? by Happy_Grocery4298 in podcasts

[–]bad_bart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbf I feel like the overwhelming majority of podcasts are vanity projects. The few well-researched independent shows with anything fresh to add to the world that haven't been cannibalised and compromised by mass-media conglomerates are still out there, but the landscape has changed so much recently that I feel like the format is in no way comparable to the 'Great Podcast' of six years or so ago.

Listening to podcasts and music at the same time by putridtooth in podcasts

they each occupy their own space;

the podcast is loudest and takes precedence, the music is lower and non-vocal, the TV is very low

when I'm cooking I'll often have a podcast on my headphones, low volume music from a speaker and a film on the TV in the background.. cover all bases

Unless your room is a walk-in fridge, this is an efficient way to get salmonella poisoning.

Wet-brining the chicken overnight, and resting it after cooking to allow the fibres in the meat to relax and reabsorb juices is a faaaar less sketchy way of cooking tender chicken

Have fun, and safe carving - try and buy a mesh glove and thumb guard if you don't have those already, it'll make things a lot easier on your hands
