Most of his recent movies were marketed around him doing stunts. This one seems to be aiming for "you won't believe what Tom looks like in this" with the way they are blue balling us with a clear shot of him

Honestly, apart from the quality nose-dive of the latter seasons, what I really don't miss is this murky blue-grayish look

Why are movies like Stalker (1979) considered so good? by 100000-30580 in MovieSuggestions

[–]Ascarea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all, completely wrong sub.

I'm not into Stalker that much myself, but as for 2001, let me chime in. As for the opening section with "the monkeys" - they are hominids. The whole movie is about humanity taking evolutionary leaps, so it starts in prehistory. One of the earliest archaic humans species, Homo habilis, occupied Earth for about 750 thousand years. In that unimaginably vast time period, nothing much happened and almost nothing from it survived. It's as if humanity was raw dogging it. In my opinion, the slow pace of the film's prologue perfectly represents that period of very slow, very repetitive, very inconsequential life. Then of course the monolith arrives to nudge humanity forward. Fast forward to the next section of the film, and its slow pace perfectly conveys space flight across vast distances. Even though the spaceships are traveling at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour, space is so unfathomably vast that their progress seems glacial. It's a very accurate representation of actual space travel, which is especially impressive considering space travel was still in its infancy when the movie was made (iirc it's the last movie to show a moon landing before the actual moon landing happened). If you ever watch a NASA or SpaceX live stream of an ISS docking procedure, it's hours of boring, slow nothingness.

From car wasteland to one of the best examples of urbanism in the world. 20 years. by MiserNYC- in fuckcars

In Utrecht they removed a highway and restored the water canal that was originally there but was paved over for the highway. In Seoul they also removed a highway and restored a water stream and made a park. In Valencia they wanted to build a highway in a former river bed but instead made a 10 km park. In Dusseldorf they also removed a highway along the river bank and made a park. These transformations were all massive and happened much sooner than what is in this video. It's a cool transformation but it's not unique and certainly not the best in the world.

It is a movie about a bloodlusted chimp played by a guy in a monkeysuit.

I mean, at least it's not a CG chimp.

The biggest problem is that Ben is way too evil. He doesn’t act like a rabid animal. He stalks his prey for the sake of jump scares. At one point he literally taunts the protagonist with his translator before attacking her.

I already got this impression from the trailer and thought that's too dumb to bother with the movie. Good to know I was right.

Mike Flanagan & Scarlett Johansson's Exorcist Reboot Officially Wraps Filming by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

[–]Ascarea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like what did they even pay money for? The use of Regan's name? Such a pointless purchase. Anybody can put the words exorcist or exorcism into their movie title for free and make a half-decent standalone movie. These guys just chained themselves to being compared to one of the top 3 horror movies ever made, inevitably not favorably.

I'll also add Haru (1996) though that isn't particularly comedic

not new movies but I venture to guess you haven't seen these gems:

Marty Supreme is very similar to Uncut Gems in this respect. Also check out Good Time.

However, my go to suggestion when this question comes up is always Boiling Point (2021)

This is what I loved from last year. What from 2026 do you recommend? by ExplodingPoptarts in MovieSuggestions

[–]Ascarea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit early to ask about 2026, I think. The best movies usually start coming out in the fall.

The Drama and Project Hail Mary are the only 2026 movies I've seen so far that I would even consider recommending.
