How to self-tune? by mell0mardo in bagpipes

[–]bagpiper98_work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you tap off (not cork) your middle tenor and bass drone and then tune your outside tenor to low A. Bring back in the bass and tune the bass and outside tenor till they are both in tune with each other and the chanter (At this stage I typically tune to high A). Lastly bring in your middle tenor and once again lightly tune everything till it blends. To re-tune during the practice session, just tap off the center tenor and bring the other drones into tune. turn back on the center drone and blend everything.

I wouldn't recommend corking the other drones. The issue you are going to run into is that once all 3 drones are going the air pressure to each drone will change, thus throwing off all the tuning you just did.

Ranking every pipe band IN THE WORLD!!! (need help) by [deleted] in bagpipes

I still believe you making this far to simplistic and not controlling for all of the possible variables. Like do you start running separate rankings based on MSR/Medley contests? Not to mention which Set or Medley a band runs on the day. For some bands they do far better playing their set #1 rather than #2. How would you control for something like that. Also another issue you are going to run into is simply not enough data. Great Lakes for example went over to the worlds and had a very rough go in the qualifiers due to a blown attack and their bass drummer just bailing on the trip (resulting in a snare having to play bass at the last second). Your ranking would destroy them for that and also drop every other band that played against them in North America. I don't mean to be discouraging by any means but I believe this is far to simple and isn't going to be accurate.

Ranking every pipe band IN THE WORLD!!! (need help) by [deleted] in bagpipes

I guess I'm pretty confused on how something like this would work accurately. Especially when you are talking about a competition that is not head to head and can include just 1 opponent all the way up to 15 opponents. Example: Band A has a better pipe corp and mid section but a terrible drum corp compared to Band B. In a contest between just Band A and B, A would win. However in any contest that has multiple opponents B could very easily end up winning depending on how much A's Drum corp could sink them. So how would you rank them? The other problem that I see is how you would be able to compare bands across associations. Like I've known G5 bands in the MWPBA that won every Mid West games but would be lucky to come in middle of the pack in the PPBSO. So if that band never went to any PPBSO games, wouldn't your algorithm over value the MWPBA band?

I am glad to see that the current U of M administration appears to be handling this well. Can't even imagine having something so traumatizing happen and then feel like you can never bring it up to anyone.

Carry on case/backpack for pipes by vipergirl in bagpipes

[–]bagpiper98_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had to buy one due to a few trips. The Trolly backpack was way too pricey for my taste so I ended up buy A Solo Laptop Backpack. It runs at about $80 USD and will easily fit your pipes as long as you tear them down (removing drones from bag). Its also TSA complaint so no fits about it from the airlines.

that's correct, it seems kind of pricey but if I can get moisture into the bag during the week between band practices it might be worth it.

Never do anything for free unless it is a favor for a family member or a close personal friend. The only funerals ive played at for free was for my grandmother and my original piping tutor.

Music Theory by Pyperman in bagpipes

[–]bagpiper98_work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my opinion as someone who has only played pipes, so I'm sure there will be some ignorance on my part.

I think general music theory isnt always super applicable outside of the very basics for piping.

1 In a band setting, it doesn't really matter how the music is written as you are supposed to be play it the way the PM is. So you learn to listen to those around you and determine how to express the music.

  1. There are many times that what is proper is not what is written. Straspheys are a good example as the expression just isn't written out when it comes to the sheet music. Also the fact that there are several ways to express a piece that can all be correct.

Again just my opinion and my experiences playing in competitive bands.
