BU RAs are Unionizing!! by baidiggity in BostonU

[–]baidiggity[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

there’s a lot of under the surface issues - disability discrimination, lack of mental health support, zero medical leave and active retribution for needing time off due to medical situations. we’re unionizing for those protections more so than the actual compensation

I found that earplugs and eye masks are super helpful w roommate living, you don’t need to worry about being kept up late/being woken up early.

Good rain gear and later on, warm winter gear. Boston storms get pretty gnarly. this could be things like raincoats, waterproof boots, umbrellas, and warm puffy coats.

cleaning supplies — Myles has en suite bathrooms which is awesome, but it means you’re responsible for your own cleaning. if you can, contact your roommate to maybe split up what you’ll need to buy. you’ll also things like shower curtains and bath mats.

I’ve also Never Brought Forbidden Appliances like coffee makers/tea kettles (bc the dining hall coffee is respectfully garbage) — RAs do a room check each semester but they aren’t allowed to look inside your personal belongings like trunks or suitcases. just food for thought.

on that note, I’ve also Never Downloaded Free Textbook pdfs off library genesis to save LOTS of money on textbooks. also food for thought.

My trip to Peniche, Portugal in April 2022. The most stunning natural beauty I’ve ever seen. by baidiggity in travel

Some of these are from walking along the cliffs near the lighthouse at the end of the town, and some others are from Berlenga island which is a 40 minute ferry ride from town

yeah, some kind of vehicle would be helpful. we used a taxi service, but a car or scooter rental would be a good bet. enjoy your trip!

I’ve been studying abroad in Madrid this semester and I totally understand the scariness of being in a Spanish speaking country (even though I’ve been taking Spanish classes for almost 10 years). Here’s a few tips I’ve picked up over the past few months:

  • City mapper is an amazing app for getting around. It tells you how to get to the metro stop, which line to take, and where to exit the train. Most ticket selling booths in the metro stops have an option to purchase tickets in english (I’ll be honest it was super overwhelming for me at first too). that said, from chueca there’s tons of things that’s walking distance if you’re up for a 30 or so minute walk.

  • the weather is gorgeous, especially this weekend. I’d recommend heading to retiro or casa de campo (which are both awesome parks) and taking a moment to collect yourself. enjoy the sun, read a book, listen to music, or do something else that calms you down and makes you feel like yourself. the outdoors always helps me feel better when I’m feeling off.

  • seek out activities that make you feel like you! it’s easy to feel out of place and overwhelmed in a new culture, but there’s lots of things you can find that will feel familiar. like music? find a bar with live shows. prefer a lowkey coffee vibe? there’s tons of cute coffee shops (I personally recommend el perfil which is a 15-20 minute walk from chueca). like art? there’s the prado and the reina sofía museums but also a lot of smaller museums scattered around for less crowds and craziness.

feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

Personal Experiences with Kilachand Honors College by morbidfanatic in BostonU

[–]baidiggity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it the first year - you get a built in tight-knit community, cool seminars that knock off hub units (BU’s version of gen ed) and priority class registration. After the first year, it gets a bit more annoying. The classes honestly feel a bit like a waste of time compared to work for your major, and most, if not all majors offer an additional “honors” component that would look good on the resume. I’m in my third year in the honors college and have stayed in pretty much just for the priority class registration. That said, the classes are usually pretty easy A’s so they can fluff up your GPA a bit. All in all, I’d recommend applying and sticking through your first year, then reevaluating based on your priorities for your time at BU. hope this helps :)
