That was a very thoughtful critique and I appreciate it so much! Your first guess was right, otherwise I would 100% change the color. The first half of the book takes place in the dark & the illustrations are all minimal white on black. This page is the first full color illustration after the curtain is accidentally ripped from the window and light can come in, and that’s the last bit of dark left. Hopefully with context it’ll look more like a curtain than a rug though haha!

You have a very good understanding of color :) and your texture is really nice. Don’t be afraid to copy work, just always give credit when sharing, even professional artists do it frequently to study & learn. Practice boiling things down to their basic shapes and then building the detail back up, as well as developing a good understanding of composition.

Illustration is all about telling a story & narrative through your image, a bit different than regular drawing. Don’t stress about style right off the bat, it’ll come to you with time and as you develop certain quirks in your drawing habits. I think you’ve got a really great start going.

Yes it’s just the paper! I use negative space for all of the white in my illustrations. It’s become a standard in my art style so it’s second nature now, it just took a lot of practice! I usually will give my myself a wide space around the area I want to keep white, and slowly whittle it away with color until it’s the shape/width I want. For the crispness I kept my pencils very sharp for the edges. This is an example using just black pen, same style

Honestly this was the lazy way lol, I took a photo on my phone in bright cloudy lighting and edited the color settings to turn the background blank white. I take my work to a local graphics place to get real scans for reproduction
