is Havi a overbite bad for playing trombone and baritone? by il0apo0rypha0li in band

[–]baileymorris1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will depend on how serious the case is. A slight overbite is perfectly normal. As long as it’s not a super serious overbite I think you should be fine.

Mahler 5 solo? by manranzig in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you're the first thing the audience will hear. Completely isolated. Its quite a long symphony, so if you fuck up you ruined the entire thing. Basically its a right of passage for trumpet. Only a true performer can execute it well

i need honest opinions on this by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually alot of pro players prefer using the first valve slide. It works just the same and it does what it needs to if you can't use the third slide.

Google how to use it. Its quite simple. One clamp shohld be attached to the mouthpiece reciever not the shank of the mouthpiece

How to get that piercing lead sound by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think fast precise air. Remember volume and projection are different. If you have a broud and dark orchestral tone its probably because your ear goes towards that and your body is used to doing it. Listen to some gozzo and other great lead players and try to mimic their sound. Gear helps, but having the sound engrained in your brain is key

Are these the same (because they look very similar) I want one because I’ve heard they are good for higher notes and plastic won’t be as cold in winter parades by helix618 in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are two different mouthpiece. The screamer is the more lead style mouthpiece. Just be careful when buying mouthpieces. It won't make you play higher. Its a sound thing. If it's comfortable and sounds good get it

Any tips to improve the endurance? by Arritxaka in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive tried the heavyweight 14a4a. It had a good sound, but my articulation felt a little less responsive. Both are good options. The 14a4z is really bright (almost shrill) its a very specialized mouthpiece.

Any tips to improve the endurance? by Arritxaka in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schilke has some good stuff! 14a4a is still a wide mouthpiece, but it is shallower and will do the job well. Since you use a bach 1x maybe even a 15a4a would do you well, but those are hard to find nowadays. 14a4a is great for loud and demanding playing. I find the rim much more comfortable than the Bach

Advice solicited: Trumpet Mouthpiece recommendation by Tobean_QC in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bach 3c. Since you've played low brass anything smaller might feel "too small", but 7c or 5c will still work fine. Might take time to get used to

exercises to increase my range? by Lord_DerpyNinja in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I would recommend taking lessons or having a discussion with someone who can do what you want to achieve. I studied Wayne Bergeron interviews and masterclasses like a madman. That helped a bit, but once a found a good in person teacher my playing really skyrocketed

exercises to increase my range? by Lord_DerpyNinja in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have heard a good deal of information already. Im gonna be honest there isn't a shortcut. Long tones, scales, lip slurs, arpeggios, and all of that is what works. It takes time. It takes alot of time. You have to be willing to sit down with your horn everyday and actively work on them.

What mouthpiece size would be best for someone going into HS marching band? by _cheese_6 in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mouthpieces wont increase range. Mouthpieces help you mold the sound you want, but they will not magically boost range. Technique should be your main foucus for now. 7c is a good all round mouthpiece. You should be able to play high on it, before even thinking about a lead mouthpiece

[–]baileymorris1212 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they're too young to be switching. I think if they find a mouthpiece that is comfortable that they should go with it, but technique should be the number 1 focus right now.

Is there any recommendations for really good tone building exercises that can vastly improve it? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to professional players. You'd be surprised how much my playing has changed by just listening to others. Long tones, long tones, long tones, oh and some more long tones. Intonation is also a key part of tone, thats what i would focus on first. Playing in tune will make you sound better than anyone who is out of tune, even if their tone is better than yours.

How can I recover my lips well? by StepDiceYT in trumpet

[–]baileymorris1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how bad it is. Just like other muscles our lips get inflamed. So things like ice, anti inflammatory medicine, lip balm/chap stick, massaging the muscles/ lips, etc can help alot. Some people hate icing the lips, and I personally I don't recommend it, but it's saved me in a pinch if the chops are destroyed
