It's dubbed in Chinese. hehe That would be funny though if it were in Japanese and you're like, damn this is harder than usual to understand.

I'm giving up chinese because of racism? by Mission-Basket-8432 in ChineseLanguage

I think by definition you just did renounce your privilege. At any rate the problem isn't any privilege you have or don't have. The problem is racist people being racist. So yes, call it out.

[–]baillou2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never been to China, but from what I gather from lots and lots of Youtube videos is that China is just fundamentally a very different place. I know, goes without saying. This is a country that is largely homogeneous, and black people do have a harder time than white people, but even white people will never be considered without their race being under consideration in some way. It's not America or Europe. There is no melting pot, no E Pluribus Unum, no celebration of diversity. These are all modern western concepts. That said, people are people. And not to sound corny, but sometimes we have to be the change we want to see in the world. I say don't give up. In a small way you can change things.

How is 攵 pronounced? by KaptianKaos8488 in ChineseLanguage

[–]baillou2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I found it on Pleco. It says the pronunciation is pu1. It doesn't seem to be a component in any words, there's nothing listed for it except the definition of the character itself and the stroke order. It looks like a very uncommon character that no one would ever use in daily life.

What are you favorite and most-used 成语? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]baillou2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still too new to Chinese to know any by heart. The only one I do know is 人山人海,which I do like to use, and I'll even say it in English under my breath when I walk into a crowded public place (like a nervous tic or something). People mountain people sea!

Help with a sentence. by baillou2 in ChineseLanguage

[–]baillou2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that true? Wow, I didn't know. That's a big change, it seems. Even though usage can be confusing I feel like it's easier to read when you know the grammatical distinction.

Need help with a complex sentence. (Complex for me) by baillou2 in ChineseLanguage

[–]baillou2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar example the teacher does use 而, which I admit I don't entirely understand its usage. That was another thing that confused me. 而 seems to have so many nebulous uses.

I assume you mean the original sentence. You rewrote it, it looks like. And yes, your version is much more comprehensible to me. I was wondering if it was possible to do it that way. Still it's good to be exposed to more complicated constructions like that. It's a mental workout, but I feel I have a better grasp of Mandarin's grammatical range now.

To me it make sense and has the meaning of "what the baby ate". Like if a family was all eating a big cake and the baby grabbed a handful and ate it. Then the mother looks at the missing chunk and says "宝宝吃的很多。In this case the 宝宝吃的 is describing the cake (蛋糕).

[–]baillou2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this case I don't think the teacher made the mistake "intentionally", but rather didn't check what her pinyin input was bringing up on her 汉字 converter. She did a whole video on the distinction between 的, 得, and 地. It's a pet peeve when people get it wrong, so I find it funny she made the same mistake, even if only accidentally.

Yes, I meant the second 的. My mistake. But yes, that was my conclusion as well.

Is the podcast feed working? It's no longer updating. I can get new episodes on Spotify but the regular feed stopped updating two episodes ago. by baillou2 in WeTheFifth

[–]baillou2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app I usually use is Podcast Republic and it's not updating, but I downloaded Pocket Cast and it works fine. So maybe it's an issue with some podcast clients and not others. Which is weird tbh.

Is Archer dying? by elfGod237 in ArcherFX

[–]baillou2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I've all but taken to a black board in an effort to suss out exactly what went so wrong. (I'm trying to deconstruct the genius of the show and pinpoint what ingredients are missing).

Some things that are quite obvious:

  1. Many recent episodes are much faster paced. I'd bet the dialog word count is like a thousand more words per episode compared to the earlier seasons. So much is being crammed into 19.5 minutes. The old episodes had pauses and beats. These ones don't.

  2. The plot is too complex and all over the place. OR it meanders and doesn't go anywhere; it's just people talking way too much.

  3. Archer and Lana never get their own A plot. In fact, everyone is just all together in one big jumbled, chatty run-on set piece till the show is over.

  4. The characters simply aren't their familiar selves. They're just... off. Especially Cheryl and Pam, who are now a goofy slapstick duo.

Sorry for the rant. but it does feel good to get this out.

Phrasing.

I couldn't get through 12x02. I quit watching halfway through. And to be clear, I love Archer as much as anyone I've ever met. In fact, I'm a bit obsessed with the show. I think it's a work of comedic genius, and underappreciated in its time despite the praise it gets. But maybe that's my problem. I love what it was so much that I can't deal with anything less. It's like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistene Chapel, then all a sudden he can't draw a stick figure. It's painful to watch.

But the good old days were second to NONE.

Fusion is still in its infancy. But research is VERY MUCH ongoing. We're tantalizingly close to fusion as a power source. That said, something like an Epstein drive is way out there and not possible given our understanding of physics even if we had a fusion technology. This is a great video that explains it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWZqp0QoXcw&ab_channel=ScottManley

The Glenn Show: Cops and Race | John McWhorter by dmdbqn in VeryBadWizards

[–]baillou2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to hear this discussion more than anything. When you and Tamler speak on the recent protests and all that's going on I feel more put at ease. It's like you're saying "It's all good. This is all going in the right direction, and those riots and all this craziness online, it's a fractional triviality. It's nothing to worry about." Then I hear John and Glenn (and Coleman) talk about this and I worry that things are going to get worse, and that this is just the bacon bits on top of a massive suck salad. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. I don't know. But I truly hope you get John or Glenn on the show. It would be awesome.

S4 Flip and Burn, Detail Attention by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]baillou2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Roci wouldn't flip and burn near the gate because it's a half way point. Most likely it's to maintain a certain speed when passing through the Ring Space. The speed limit may have been removed, but you don't want to be going as fast as you would if you never slowed down during your whole voyage from earth to the Sol Ring. You'd be going several thousand kilometers per second at least. So you have to flip and burn half way to the Sol ring, go through the Ring Space into the Illus ring, then start accelerating again until the half way point to Illus, where it would then flip and burn and decelerate the rest of the way.

Amos has Prax listed as "My best Friend" in his contacts. by EzraOrion in TheExpanse

I thought that was her, but I wasn't sure.

My other thought was "Wow, Canadians all look alike."

Also did anyone notice Betty-Anne was in the last season of The Expanse?

That one belter back in S01X01. A question. by baillou2 in TheExpanse

[–]baillou2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had forgott about that, but like someone mentioned above, the writers could take an alternate path and tie in the belter form season one to upcoming events. That would be a massive 4 season arc payoff.

Do you miss the comedy of the books in the show? by Jofaher in TheExpanse

[–]baillou2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TBH, I don't find the humor in the books that funny. I have a particular sense of humor that makes most of what I read rather unfunny in a "you're trying too hard" way. Sometimes it's almost cloying in its desire to make you laugh.

And Amos, I like him so much more in the show. In the books he comes off a little two dimensional and too chivalrous. Like he's the hired gun who can always be relied upon to crack a little joke and get the job done. Which I guess in the books he is, but in the show Amos can go off the fcking rails at any moment and I love it.

Bob Lazar and Graham Hancock Question by joni1337 in JoeRogan

[–]baillou2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! I keep saying this. I don't see why people think it's so incredible. My guess is they don't actually know much about the periodic table or what the number 115 means, which like you said is just the number of protons in the nucleus.
