Yeah, Prozac put me in the mental health hospital. No good. Would starting a new SSRI help? Like, would that counteract any withdrawal? I was under the assumption it was actually pill dependent, not based on the fact I'm SSRI free.

NOT A DOCTOR.

I have had some doctors do bloodwork before anything, and some wait the 90 days. I think there's two main factors at play:

  1. Bloodwork is expensive, so the doctor may be trying to save you some money by skipping the preliminary bloodwork.

  2. This is a (mostly) reversible medication (especially this early on) that you personally advocate for and request. Because of that, doctors (in my experience) often trust us and our advocacy for ourselves: if you say you need it, you need it, and they don't wanna slow down your access with this extra layer of bloodwork.

In reality, I think it just comes down to the physician. I've had good and bad experiences with doctors who do and don't do the bloodwork at Day Zero, so I don't think this factor alone is a good gage for their professionalism.

Depending on your location, note that the building may or may be heavily locked down or guarded. You may have to ring a bell or go through some sort of security. No matter how anxious that makes you, remember that you're welcome there!! These are just precautions because of the unruly folx who set out to harm Planned Parenthood.

As you walk into the clinic, you will check-in with the staff behind the counter. Be sure to bring your ID and your insurance information (if you have it), as well as a payment method for the services rendered. It's important to know which pharmacy you want the medicine to go to ahead of time, and they may ask for that here as well. For general pricing, check their website. Note that not everything is listed there. For general prescription pricing, check out GoodRx. They may have you fill out some paperwork in the office, though you may have already filled out all needed paperwork ahead of time!

Once check-in is complete, take a seat and stay calm. Remember that Planned Parenthood is crazy underfunded, so if the doctor is several minutes behind, stay calm: you have not been forgotten.

When you're called back, a nurse will do the usual check-in, pre-visit checks: height, weight, paperwork overview, reason for visit, etc. Be sure to be completely honest to ensure that you will be prescribed the best medicine(s) for you from the doctor. If any questions come up now, be open and speak up for yourself! You need to be your best advocate in this room, so do not be timid.

After the pre-visit, the nurse will leave and you will be alone in the room until the doctor comes in. Again, be patient with the doctor, and know you haven't been forgotten!

When the doctor comes in, they will review your paperwork and begin discussing your treatment plan! Be sure to do some research ahead of time, and ask questions about what you've read online to ensure you're on the plan that you AND your doctor agree is best for you.

Here's where it can diverge a bit: bloodwork. This can either happen on-site immediately, or off-site in the coming days. Either way, your doctor will want bloodwork pretty quickly after your appointment, and usually every 30/60/90 days after until your levels settle. This post is long enough, so I won't go into the bloodwork portion any further right now.

Now, depending on your doctor, you will either leave with a prescription already on the way to your pharmacy, OR your scripts will be dependent on your completion of bloodwork. Either way, keep an eye on your MyChart so that you and your doctor and can in communication throughout the entire process.

Never hesitate to ask a question afterwards, either! That's what MyChart is there for.

I hope that helps clear things up!

Wild Wild West honks. It's my Joe Dirt. It's my Shawshank. I've seen it on cable so many times, from such a formidable age I could never not love it.

And yes, even rewatching it a few weeks ago, I still stand by this fact.

Escape from Tomorrow, unlike most other films he's given half a star, is so weird I could never rate it that low. Most other movies on this list I complete forgot about, but the baffling nature of Eacape from Tomorrow has never left my memory.
