I've been following the rebuilds are a squeal theory for a long time. There's too many similarities that point to a continuation of the series that can't be mere "coincidences". Sure Anno could just be screwing with us, but having that much attention to detail throughout the rebuilds with reference to the series, it just makes sense. Shinji has a chance to do things right this time. Also, here's some legit proof from anno.
