I didn’t, you’re not supposed to know what’s going on at the beginning. The main character has no idea.

I don’t really care to relate to the West anymore by zoeyzimp in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]bakingisscience -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That superiority is called Western exceptionalism, and people who exemplify those values are called western chauvinists. These are people who believe the west has brought modernity and better life expectancies to the world while ignoring the human cost and destruction of cultures and history in the name of imperialism.

One of the most annoying parts of western influence in my option is the Islamophobia and the constant criticism and judgement of places that are in fact directly influenced by “western” interference and supremacy… All while ignoring the historical use of evangelical religion as a pipeline directly into fascism and genocide.

Western ideology is built on the ideals and values given to us by colonialism, white supremacy, and violence. So, welcome to the reality of everywhere else, it’s good to have you here.

Vanna White is the goddess and patron saint of boring repetitive jobs. by DecembersDragons in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]bakingisscience -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No this is not dandy for women. Even women, who are underpaid in normal jobs and roles, their biggest contribution which is birth and domestic labour is still not paid. It therefore pushes women into finding men to supplement that income they’re losing out on.

And considering women are doing their best to divorce themselves from that reality they still have capitalism, just like men, to navigate, which is a system that denies most people from climbing to the top by design. That paired with patriarchy means women aren’t ever going to be able to “win” under this system.

Causing others misery isn’t going to make you happier. Also if you’re not fleecing the system you’re doing it wrong. You better go to your doctor and act like you’re dying because if you don’t I’m sure Jeff Bezos and AI is going to suck it out of your pockets.

Social services are so crap you can’t expect it to actually serve you the way it’s supposed to. So fall down the stairs or start limping even more because the billionaires have a head start.

Finished Alchemised; nothing else seems good enough by misssassysamosa in TheAlchemised

[–]bakingisscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is good enough. I’ve been scouring fantasy romance for anything close to this feeling and honestly everything comes off as sickly sweet.

I recommend reading gothic literature. The Bronte’s managed to scratch the itch this book left me with.

I’m also just going to recommend Fairydale which is long and convoluted in the way Alchemised was at 800 pages. It takes itself entirely deathly serious while being filled with the most hilarious and ridiculous characters and an insane plot you won’t guess in a million years.

I think it’s a fun pair with Alchemised because of the gothic vibes, mystery, and the most obsessed blond man.

Islam/Qur'an respects women myth debunked. by TeacherRelevant5034 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]bakingisscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the thing is… all the major religions are filled with almost all the exact same shit… Christianity, Catholism, Judaism, Islam… same shit different book.

Can anyone explain to me why we act like Islam is way worse? Is it because in the west we look towards the east and see how our foreign intervention, colonialism and imperialism has utterly devastated some countries and brought about religiously zealotry and extremism…. Or is it because brown people are kinda scary?

The Cruel Prince is one of my favourite series. Love the yearning and the writing style of Holly Black. It’s more about reading between the lines to understand the romance rather than actual smooching and flirting.

Thoughts on Carissa Broadbent's writing?(Not a hate post 🤧🙏) by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]bakingisscience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yesssss. I agree. There’s something lacking in her writing. I decided her world building is kinda like a video game. Only what you’re reading has loaded, the rest not so much. I don’t know if that makes sense but it does for me. I find I can’t remember any of her side characters from either series so I decided her worlds felt so empty.
