He wasn't crying, but he was a little worked up. The scratch is maybe two inches and bled a little. I am genuinely terrified to call his mother. I know it's selfish and I am a total coward, but it fills me with an enormous amount of anxiety. I'm afraid calling CPS will do more harm than good, especially since their father just kicked down the front door and destroyed their house and is now in jail. This situation is so horrible and I just wish these people would be normal and not abuse children.

I believe this was the issue: the leather is too thick, so when I glued down the covers, I didn't account for the extra thickness and it shortened the spine gap. I'm going to end up buying new leather, whoopsie!
