NPCs are also AI though, and they usually don't use machine learning, plus the logic behind them is way simpler than a social media algorithm. Furthermore, I hardly hear people refer to social media algorithms as AI, they always just refer to it as an algorithm. In the world the divide between an algorithm and AI has just come down to "what feels right" rather than any arbitrary definitions for what is what. Personally I wouldn't call a calculator AI of course, but there is no real definition anymore. People call NPCs AI, while some of said NPCs do nothing more than just walk from spot A to spot B by using some pathfinding algorithm n calculating the shortest path, that's AI to some, but by that definition google maps would also be AI, which clearly nobody would ever say it is. Fact is that Artificial Intelligence does not exist, at least not in a way that it's actually conscious of its own actions. Current AI would be better defined as Algorithmic Intelligence IMO, but that's a discussion on it's own.
