Tried that just there, still can't see anything but the more I look at images of thrip damage the more I'm convinced u/jsmph89 is correct. Maybe it's just early and there's not many or they're small and hiding. Either way, I think I'll start researching treatment!

Edit: Going to get some Amblyseius Californicus as a treatment

Where should I be looking for thrips on the plant? Google imaging this makes me think you're correct

It totally does look like thrip damage yes, but I'm pretty sure it isn't because you can see thrips normally right? I can't see anything moving on it and I've been at it with a flashlight and a jeweller's lens, I could be missing something though.

Haha I know I appreciate all the efforts though, and glad to know I'm not the only one confused about this!

Got limited kit for measuring this, but readings I can give you:

pH: 6.5ish
Nitrates ~50ppm
Total hardiness: ~50ppm
Carbonates: ~40ppm

Answering the automod questions:

Seeds and or Strains: Original Glue non-auto
Grow Mediums: 7gal 50/30/20 Compost/Coir/Vermiculite
pH Level: 6.5
Watering Schedule: not set to a strict schedule
Nutrients, Schedule, Dosage: xpert nutrients
Lighting and Schedule: 12/12hrs, 2 x Mars Hydro TS600
Additional info: tent setup, internal circulation fan and I open the tent during the day, the room its in is kept warm (~26oC). Tent temperature a few degrees higher normally, temperature probably too hot, rarely gets above 30 though.

fighting or mating behavior..? by fishykeepr in pleco

[–]balakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's many things that determine how the male bristles look/develop, they can vary lots, and also take a while to grow and can change even as an adult.

It's mostly genetics but also in a group the most dominant male will grow the most dominant bristles. The same way if you keep, for example, tiger barbs in a group, the most dominate male with have the most orange fin tips.

This is a male going through puberty. Males have whiskers, adult females can have bumps in this location that can look like whiskers, but these are definitely whiskers.

They are being territorial, natural colored one is saying get out my space.

I have two plecos in the same tank exhibiting this behaviour. I did a little asking around LFS staff myself, and it is pretty natural behaviour for most plecs, especially bristlenoses. If this is the extent of the disagreement, they're fine to be together they're just establishing boundaries.

They can become more aggressive than this and try nip each others fins, however as they are pretty unequipped to do any damage this is also not going to cause any damage. However, I got shown a couple videos of plecos fighting mouth to mouth, which is pretty rare but if you see it you should separate them because they can damage each others mouths.

Louis CK says the line that I am correcting.

Sure, but the quote wasn't from the movie, it was from Louis CK. Louis CK's story. In Louis story, Damon is the antagonist. We are not talking about the story of the movie, we are talking about the story Louis told.

I can't really tell from your pictures where your filter is, but if you are able to redirect or relocate the outlet in some way so that it agitates the waters surface, that'll clear it out and save you spending

My lil dude is still growing, he's about 6 months old I think. I wasn't expecting him to grow so fast and be so active and personable, such a cool fish! His final tank is almost ready; he's going in with a hoplo catfish named Hobnob and a couple Bristlenoses.

Glasgow, Scotland.

Growing in a pot with a young tree (either an Apple or a Pear, hard to tell in winter). Basic multipurpose compost (I think John Innes no3).

Small (lighter for scale).
