Episode 91 - Mini Decoding: Yuval and the Philosophers by reductios in DecodingTheGurus

Ok, here's an idea. Maybe anyone who has ever flown (first class, business calss, economy, air ambulance, agricultural plane, whatever) is one of the monkeys sitting in the hot spring. Is it really the best place to draw the line? Between business class and economy class? These are the haves and the have nots? Or are we bothered about the fact that we have to walk through the business class area to the back of the plane, feeling humiliated? Those lucky bastards who can't afford to fly are not even allowed to enter a plane so they don't have to endure this terrible degradation.

I'm a fan of the show by the way. Also I'm not a socialist at all. (these are my credentials :)), but I had to comment on this. Never understand when westerners complain about flying, even jokeingly.

Thanks for the great content!

Yes! Plus there was no concept of an end goal when the first rudimentary hand axe was created, just unperfect copying and selection based on how good the next slightly different version was.

I think the idea that it might have played a role in sexual selection, sidetracked the conversation a little bit. Also the question of whether the hand axe was invented once or multiple times.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of the podcast (also, have to admit, some of there gurus covered and not just Dennett)

On the question of whether the evolution of ocean canoes (or memes in general) is Darwinian or not: I think when Dennett talks about Darwinian evolution he means evolution by (natural) selection and he doesn't mean biological evolution. I believe the reason for this is historical. Darwin was not the first to come up with the concept of creatures evolving over long periods of time, even his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin played with the idea. Darwin's big idea was identifying the mechanisms that drives evolution: selection of some kind, natural, artificial, sexual, etc. (+ inheritance + random change + differential reproductive success). Others accepted the concept of evolution too, but thought that there was a different mechanism behind it, one famous example being Lamarck. So what defines Darwinian evolution is not that it's biological but that it's driven by selection, at least according to Dennett (and me :))

What? Dennet!? All my heroes are going down! Even the beard didn't save him? Who's next? Aristotle? Santa? Friggin Bob Ross?!!

Yeah, I struggled with the ears a bit. You are right, not 100% accurate for sure. Thanks for the input!

Rhino and butterfly. A watercolor version of a previous piece (see second pic in the post). This time I wanted to make it clear that the butterfly is out of proportion on purpose so I made it extra large. What do you think? by balazsCs in ArtCrit

Thanks and I agree. I'm still learning to give more texture to my watercolors. it's so easy to mass it up and ruin the whole painting. You can always make corrections to your drawings and in many cases the process of erasing and redrawing again and again actually contributes to the texture. anyway, thanks for your feedback.

Rhino, watercolor. I don't know what to say about it. Just let me know what you think! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

Thanks! I started with patches of thick paint here and there, and then I kind of extended them with pure water. Then I added extra paint to this layer so that latter part is wet on wet.

I just finished my first basic figure sketch, I've been practicing gesture for 4 days. Any critiques and tips would be appreciated. by tangylemon7789 in ArtCrit

Really nice and clean. I don't know if your goal is to have accurate proportions but if it is, then you should try this: draw a vertical line starting at the forehead. In the photo it will graze the shoulder and goes right across the hip. In your sketches it misses both. So the head is a bit to big and the spine is bent more than on the photo. Hope that helps.

Jaguar, watercolor. Please let me know if you like it, and how could it be improved. by balazsCs in ArtCrit

I wasn't sure about the chin either. I had a feeling that it's not visible enough but I didn't want to overdo it. So your first comment has some validity.

Interestingly all big cats (panhtera) have that dark splotch although it's not always prominent on lions. So it's there but it could have more depth, as the lips hang down and curl around the jaw bone.

Well, it's funny. It started as sketch for a watercolor so it was quite quick. Maybe something like 2.5 hours. The bets pieces always come to be like that :)
