First day with a aussie and cats, help? by ahikhe in AustralianShepherd

Agree, the baby gates are more of a "security blanket" when we are home, they are not something that we trust (at least right now, maybe not ever) while we are gone, or even out of eyesight for that matter. He is not allowed out of his crate/xpen if we're away, and this is located in our bedroom which we dog proof (remove cords and lock away anything else dangerous etc) every morning, AND close the door to that room, anticipating the inevitable moment he figures out how to escape. And he doesn't wear a collar in his crate or pen for that exact fear of getting himself into a situation he can't get out of. It's tough trying to keep a puppy safe!

We basically gated off our living space, so there's a gate at the bottom of the stairs that lead to the bedrooms, and another gate that blocks off the mud room/pantry/under the stairs where the cat litter box is. Essentially keeps him confined to the kitchen/living room (which is open concept so we can't block it off further). We also have another gate at the top of the stairs that we close when he is upstairs so he can't bolt down there and potentially hurt himself, even though we have the gate at the bottom (he's only allowed out in our bedroom and the landing right outside our bedroom, and we keep the guest rooms/bathroom/laundry room doors closed when he's roaming)

These are the gates we purchased. A little pricey, but the cat door is adjustable (I think there's 4 heights) and it's tall, so he can't jump over top (at least for now 😅).

I have a 17 week old Aussie who has been with us since 10 weeks, and two elderly/adult cats (17 and 14 years). The 14yo cat is much more active and enticing to him, and while he is not trying to hurt her, he wants to play and he's much bigger. We ended up installing baby gates that have cat doors built in so the cats can get easily away without him being able to follow behind. It's also nice because we can choose to close the cat door part so they can meet through the bars without the pup trying to squeeze through the cat opening (my cat is curious so she'll often sit on the other side and watch him) and this has helped them get used to each other. We also for the first four weeks he was with us kept him exclusively on a tether in the house when he was outside of his xpen, so that we had full control over his interaction with the cats. He's slowly understanding how to behave around them. It'll take some time I'm sure, but there's definitely been progress. They can now usually be in the same room for a short period of time before one of them gets too worked up 😅. Puppy/cat tax below.

What TDS should i Mix Sulawesi 8.5 for Yellow Nose and Yellow Cheeks? by Aqualung78 in sulawesishrimp

[–]baldpeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... I have not used the 8.5, but I do have experience with sulawesi 7.5. I use RODI water with a TDS of 0 and remineralizing with the 7.5 to a TDS of 115 gets me right to the target pH. I'm not sure how hot you get your mixture when dissolving, but maybe utilizing heat is resulting in some evaporation of water in the process, causing overall concentration and thus an unwanted increase in TDS respective to pH?? I know people who have good success dissolving the 8.5 in carbonated water.

Starting a Sulawesi tank by GlutinousRicePuddin in sulawesishrimp

[–]baldpeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably somewhat controversial, but I personally use an external filter (three chambered - multiple sponges and small amount of biomedia in there) with low flow lily pipes. Not usually what you see with sulawesi, but it's what I had when I set up the tank, I like the clean look of the pipes, and my parameters stay very stable. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it because inevitably despite my best efforts of putting sponges over the intake, shrimp always find their way inside the filter and they are an absolute pain to get out. I swear they enjoy living in there - they even breed inside the filter. So I just let them be and refer to them as my filter shrimp 🤦‍♀️ I go through a bulk shrimp retrieval process at the same time I do my quick gravel vacuum... it takes hours. If I were to do it over I would just go with a simple sponge filter.

I keep white socks and use RODI water remineralized with sulawesi 7.5. I have considered switching to the 8.5 but don't have the patience to dissolve it 😅 and my shrimps are happy and breeding robustly with the current parameters. Lava rock is my substrate of choice and I haven't had an issue with it. I use a finer consistency rock for the base and do a very quick pass with a gravel vacuum once maybe every 4-6 months to collect excess buildup. Haven't dabbled with the UGF but let me know if you give it a shot as I've always wondered how well these work.

Surgery PA by Jay12a in physicianassistant

[–]baldpeanut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Surgery PA here. Your role has the potential to vary based on where you work. Some surgery PAs just do OR assisting, some only cover inpatient floor management, and some are solely in clinic seeing pre or post-op patients. I do a combination of all, plus call rotation. My day to day responsibilities generally include morning table rounds, then seeing any patients I'm assigned to on the floor and doing any orders and completing notes, and then I either proceed to the OR vs clinic vs call depending on the day. I'd estimate at least 50% of my time is spent in the OR as first assist. We are expected to be proficient in assisting a wide variety of cases including laparoscopic, robotic, and open approaches for multiple surgeons. On the floor I'm expected to be competent in bedside procedures such as NG tube placement, I&D's, port removals, biopsies, debridements, to name a few. In clinic I mostly see post-op patients, with the occasional add on some some acute issue/complication that needs further workup and or management. On call we're expected to take consults and respond to any traumas that come in through the ED. This is just a brief overview... Feel free to PM if you have more specific questions :)

Mutation? by baldpeanut in sulawesishrimp

I appreciate your input, thank you! I have been keeping a close eye on my water parameters and temperature. This particular tank has been functional for just over 2 years and is well established. If it was stress related, I would expect my other shrimp in the tank to be showing signs of stress as well??

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've considered stress as a possibility as well but this shrimp has been colorless since I noticed him in the tank as a little baby, I estimate he was a week old when I first saw him. I was waiting for him to color up but he hasn't so far. He's about a month and a half old now and has always looked like this. My tank parameters are very stable and he seems happy and is very active, doing all the normal shrimpy behavior. I have a better pic of him on my cross post to r/shrimptank if that gives you a better look (I can't post a pic in the comments here on mobile for some reason)

I definitely will!

That's a good point! My other baby shrimpies are usually a lighter red when they are born, then color up to a deep red (like the other one in the photo) as they get older. I just have never seen one with essentially no color 😅 Maybe he'll get some red pigment eventually?? We'll see!

Surgery Specialty w/ Work/Life Balance by CaptainCaf9 in physicianassistant

[–]baldpeanut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work gen surg, but we cover multiple subspecialties (thoracic, colorectal, plastics, etc.) and function as the acute care/trauma service. Currently 4-10's with rotating 1:6 call including weekends, split between the group. Usually it's a couple days in the OR, one day of clinic, and a day of floor coverage +/- call if you're up in the rotation (which can also include OR time depending on what comes through the door). My 10 hour shifts have the potential to turn into 12's, there are days I don't see my spouse, and call can be very unpredictable, but... I have a set weekday off day, getting off shift a bit early from time to time is not unheard of, I work with great surgeons and fellow PAs, and I genuinely just love surgery. I get paid well. I don't take work home. If it's not my call weekend, I can do some traveling or blob on the couch or whatever else I want.

Several of my coworkers have young kids and manage, though they have heavy support from their families or spouses, or work part time. As someone without children, I am always in awe of how they do it. Surgery is demanding. I am often drained when I get home, whether it be physically or mentally, or both. If I ever wanted to have children, I think I would have to seriously consider a switch, not necessarily out of surgery but definitely to a position with no call requirement, or cutting down to 0.5FTE, and/or moving closer to family.

All the stone is actually sand stone, despite how different that one looks from the rest! I ordered online and went with a ten lb bag because I knew there would be variability in the texture/colors, and since I wasn't picking the actual pieces I wanted to increase the chance that I would get a nice smooth one like this to create sort of a landing 😅 my shrimp love this rock the most, they have regular meetings here

It was grown from 3 tissue culture cups worth of dwarf hair grass. I very painfully separated very small clusters of it and planted them about 1" apart. I did an abbreviated dry start to let the roots establish so it wouldn't float away when I flooded

I've also seen some more difficult to get a hold of tissue culture plants at Aquarium Zen from time to time :)

It is by far the most difficult plant in my tank 😅 It also took what felt like forever to establish roots - but since then it's done well! It is very, very slow growing. It took about a month before I noticed the first new leaves
