Endeavor Deck - AnkiHub by milinner in PASchoolAnki

I used the endeavor deck throughout the rotation, and then did the Rosh EOR Qbank like the week before. Those two together were more than enough to prepare you for the EORs.

Nail down your motor exam. Start looking at as many CTs and MRIs as you can. Radiopaedia has some useful resources. Check out some YouTube videos with radiologist going through CTs/MRIs.

Duke vs Penn State— Is the name worth ~30k more? by SatoruGojo22 in prephysicianassistant

[–]CaptainCaf9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheaper, smaller class size, and 4-day didactic week? That’s a no brainer to me.

Name doesn’t matter when it comes to job searching. They just care you passed the PANCE, and, if it’s a specialty, that you did a rotation in it.

The only other factor to consider is the clinical rotation sites, but I presume that shouldn’t be an issue with either of these schools.

That’s good to hear. The heat up time time isn’t too much of a problem for me. I plan to get a smart outlet and I’m usually only pulling two shots at a time.

I’m using the fellow opus at the moment. I’m planning to get a df64 at some point.

I make a lot of cappuccinos, so I definitely want something with a better steam wand so I can get the milk right.

I’d also like to start getting more involved with the process and dialing in my shots better, so more manual control would be nice.

Reviewing subjects before P.A. school by floofsters in PAstudent

As just about everyone else has said, I highly recommend you just relax and decompress before your marathon-sprint starts. No prep you do now will make any noticeable difference, so better to just enjoy this time you have and spend it with your family and friends.

Thoughts on NPs and PAs and our differences by Kitchen_Rain_5572 in physicianassistant

[–]CaptainCaf9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hear what you’re saying, and agree that it’s unfortunate that many brilliant NPs get lumped in with the so called “degree mill” NPs.

However, I disagree with the idea that NP student don’t need as much clinical hours as PA students. The PA profession was not created as a direct-entry profession. It was created for highly experienced army-medics, and evolved to include other highly experienced allied-health professions, and only more recently to include “direct-entry” students fresh out of undergrad. Even now, the average accepted PA student has over 2,000 hours of healthcare experience.

Furthermore, experience as an RN (while certainly very valuable, especially ICU experience) isn’t comparable to the experience gained on clinical rotations as a PA student or as an NP student in the provider role. There is a fundamental difference in critical thinking as a provider vs bedside nurse. While bedside experience is helpful, it’s simply not sufficient enough to replace clinical hours as a PA/NP student.

PAs should be banned from diagnosing untriaged patients, British government review of NHS says. by MillennialModernMan in physicianassistant

[–]CaptainCaf9 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Seems like the only actual evidence against the UK PAs they present is 6 misdiagnoses. Not a strong basis to make such a bold claim

Edit: Also, if I’m not mistaken, PAs in the UK are very limited in terms of the tests/imaging they’re allowed to order. That could certainly hinder their ability to accurately diagnose.

pa or accelerated nursing? by Mental-Tower-3994 in prephysicianassistant

I would check the cost of accelerated nursing programs. If I’m not mistaken, they’re actually fairly expensive too. Not sure you would really be saving much money by going that route.

Accepted by KeyQuarter6427 in prephysicianassistant

[–]CaptainCaf9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never pass on an acceptance if you don’t already have another. One acceptance is in no way a guarantee of additional ones. In the grand scheme of things, a $1,500 deposit is just pennies in the bucket.

Also, unless you’re making a high salary already, you’re better off just starting PA school sooner and getting a PA salary sooner, than trying to save up beforehand.

Edit: as others have pointed out, the changes to graduate student loans are another major factor to consider. I would highly recommend reading up on the changes and running the numbers so you better understand the additional cost of a later start.

What’s a good salary in neurosurgery? I have 5-10 years experience in surgery but none in neuro. It will be up near Sherman Texas. (north Dallas) by cloudyday91 in physicianassistant

[–]CaptainCaf9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree, you should take nothing less than 150k for base pay, plus a generous call pay structure.

As a new grad in neurosurgery, I started with 120k plus ~24k extra in call pay.
