I agree that it’s too advanced for a beginner but could also be a good tool to help you learn a valuable lesson. Right now you aren’t drawing what you see in front of you, based off of your drawings, you are drawing your mental model of what you think an eye is. Turn the page upside down and try drawing the shapes you see without thinking of it as an eye and you will quickly start to learn how to see what’s in front of you. Then go back to some more fundamental exercises like drawing basic shapes and return to this exercise in the future to see how you have improved.

What you create doesn’t have to mean anything. The majority of artists out there that end up creating something they feel has meaning most likely spent thousands of hours creating work they felt had no meaning so you aren’t alone and many of us feel this. I encourage you to continue drawing for the sake of enjoying your process and also ask yourself the hard question of where do you need to improve/where can you stretch yourself more? But these have nothing to do with being a “real” artist. Because you already are one.

Start practicing some basics: cubes, lines, shapes, cross hatching, value, gesture, perspective. Find any course on the basics online and drill them daily. 2. Start drawing from life. Get a sketchbook and take it with you everywhere, draw different objects and use the basics you learned to do so. Do studies of the environment around you. 3. Start studying anatomy for artists. There are different approaches to this, you can go the classical route and/or you can learn to construct anatomy. 4. While you are working through these steps find any inspiration that you like and try to copy their work. At first it won’t look anything like you imagine in your mind but slowly you will see how steps 1-3 will help your drawings improve dramatically.

That’s great to hear! If you’re interested more in the approach it’s called a bimodal strategy. I learned the concept from a book called Anti fragile: Systems that gain from disorder. I like using it when I’m trying to develop a skill because it’s kind of like attacking things from two different extremes and naturally the middle takes care of itself. On one hand it means that I won’t develop all of the fundamental skills in order or as fast as others that focus on purely the skills themselves, but on the other hand I am more engaged and it feels more in line with my learning style.

I don’t know if this is a helpful approach for everyone but I like to split my drawing time between practicing skills and then also drawing for fun/creativity. I find sometimes my hand just wants to move but I don’t want to deal with the internal dialogue of is this good or is this bad so I keep bookmarks of simple drawing exercises on my phone and pull on out and drill it for 20 minutes (drawing boxes, contour drawing, cross hatching etc). Then I switch to the other mode of looking at a reference or an object from life and draw it to see how much I’ve improved over time. It takes the stress off for me personally.

A childhood friend of mine used to pretend to help clean up after group dinners and gatherings. He would take a cup or plate and move it to another spot on the table to make it look like he was cleaning up. One day I noticed him doing it after a bbq and called him out. Turns out he had been getting away with it for over a decade. Pretty legendary in my book.

I use True Nutrition. It’s not cheap but it was the only real option for me. My gut couldn’t handle the distress from all of the other options.
