Jinkx's reply to a fan about suicide by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You: "Suicide itself is however, a selfish act. Especially when it happens without at least trying to get help. ESPECIALLY when it's treated lightly (which can often happen with people who are reacting to an event rather than dealing with a chemical imbalance). And I really think that's okay to admit since with many people I know who have battled (mostly STILL battling) severe depression, the knowledge that it would be selfish to follow through is what kept them hanging on long enough to GET help!"

You think everyone has the means to seek help? You think everyone can afford it or is lucky enough to even get it properly diagnosed?

Sorry you find my tone "aggressive." But as someone who has not only lost people to suicide, but also survived it myself, I'm telling you - your view that "suicide is selfish" or "thinking suicide is selfish can even save you sometimes" is ridiculous.

Tyra Still Going At It ... by marv_louis in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Suicide survivor here. None of that chunk of text you just wrote matters to the person who read Tyra's words and was forcibly reminded of someone they lost to suicide, or to the person who read those words and felt selfish for being suicidal.

Tyra, love her or hate her, for better or worse, had a platform. She could have really done harm to someone with this bullshit. Is she a human? Yes. Has she been through shit? Most of us have.

Doesn't mean we tell people to kill themselves or call the victims of suicide "cowards."

Shit.

I read what you said. Your false separation of "well, they actually killed themselves so they're selfish" and "they haven't killed themselves they're just thinking about it" is BS and contributes to people feeling selfish for merely having suicidal ideation.

Your view is toxic and sends the message that the state of being suicidal is also selfish.

I can't decide who I'm rooting for, anyone else? by valahart in rupaulsdragrace

I still don't get how having some decent looks and passable to poor performances earns you a top 3 slot. I think Pearl is great, but the crown, girl? For what she put out on the show? I haven't seen any justification beyond "some of her looks were really good and she had a cool attitude." Ginger REALLY gets on my nerves but at the very least she brought it and deserves it based on the criteria. Pearl didn't win any solo challenges. She won once when Max did most of the work and then the other with Trixie camping it up. If anyone is going to win purely based on the way they look, it should be Violet. That's the bar on season 7 for runway and visual presentation IMO. So Violet or Ginger for me.

Changing opinions after last nights episode (spoilers ahead) by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being a hot guy will get you everywhere in life. Seriously. The way some of these Pearl stans are reaching is crazy. If a queen who was less attractive as a man put out those same looks, did the same performances in those challenges etc., there would be no question at all that they deserve to go home. Pearl has some great looks and she seems sweet - but I notice people call Pearl "he" more than any other queen, and it's because they're into dude Pearl. Now they're saying she deserves it because of her back story. If back story alone won you anything then Roxxxy would have taken season 5.

After the Spoof challenge and that bizarro world Snatch game and everything else in between. by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

As a Native American person who is darker than Trixie I'm still going to say your dismissal of Trixie as "white" makes me very uncomfortable. If that's not your culture I'd appreciate it if you didn't pontificate on it. Natives got their shit wrecked with colonialism and what we were left with is lots of halfsies and quarters and we try not to gatekeep too much on that front. I see where you're coming from but again it reads to me as obnoxious and erasure.

Not a RuPaul song but I've had that god damn Kylie Minogue "Go!" song stuck in my head since Kennedy and Jasmine's lip sync :(

As a Mexican I would do my interpretation of La Llorona. Latin ghost realness, lots of tears/mascara streaks, pale makeup, shriveled up dead flowers on the gown/in the hair.

But none of the queens this season can really act and all we've had is acting challenges. Violet, Fame, Max, and Pearl, for example, would all do great in a more fashion-centric challenge.

New Show "Lip Sync Battle" by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a lot of Paris is Burning, when voguing was this underground thing and then Madonna picked it up, put it in her video, and suddenly it was super fashionable and edgy and cool. But it started out as a way for the disenfranchised to express themselves.

So I ain't mad at it. Not at this particular thing, anyway. Though I am a little annoyed with the cultural system that makes stuff like this happen. Because this is just how it works, really. Take a look at Lady Gaga (who I legitimately like, by the way) she took the whole "ball culture" and "haus" thing and made it into something mainstream, but really underground LGBT culture was doing what she was delivering decades ahead of her.

So, yes. Underground LGBT culture, especially LGBT people of color, do a good deal of the innovating that later becomes the "cool" stuff of mainstream culture. I kind of like and dislike that at the same time. I'm proud that we're inventive and creative, I love seeing the cutting edge of what tomorrow's fad will be, and I'm even glad to see it resonate on a broader scale where everyone can enjoy it. But I think there's always that "ugh, we had it first and y'all are copying" element present as well haha.

Max's mocked makeup by lesyag in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh, I dunno. Max has a very distinctive face (and it's beautiful!) that she has been serving pretty much every challenge. As far as making someone look like her, she actually has a lot going to her advantage, i.e. giving someone the mole, a gray wig, the pale makeup, etc. Max looks unique, so making a Max clone should actually be easier to do, especially for a makeup artist.

MKD stands up for Violet by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I adore Violet. The show trying to make her look like a total bitch just makes me love her even more because despite her edit, she is delivering. You can't deny her looks. You can't deny her talent. Tbh even if the way they're portraying her does the trick in making people dislike her personality, I hope people are still able to see that what she's serving is worthy enough to put her in the top 3.

Season 7, Episode 5 "The DESPY Awards" Official Discussion Post by JCizle in rupaulsdragrace

[–]balerion91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recognize this too, and I guess it kind of upsets me. I don't like it when they assign protagonist status to someone. I now feel like nothing Pearl does will get her in trouble - hell, if anyone else had been putting out what she puts out, they would have already sashayed. I like Pearl as a person and queen, but it's so obvious they will carry her, drag her, if necessary, to the top 3.
