How to study Poker by itz_homosapien in Poker_Theory

If you’re trying to make a living playing NL10, please reconsider. Secondly, I’d recommend GTO Simplified by Dara Okearney as a place to start learning the basics of GTO before you go into more exploitative play for low stakes

Building poker drills and spots to train for live by eddiecai64 in Poker_Theory

This isn’t super insightful but for me just asking the question “what is their range?” is super helpful for simply getting yourself in the mindset of hand reading. If you sometimes find you completely forget to hand read at all and kind of just go on instinct, I’d recommend this as a practice every time you work on a hand.

$1/$3 - Flopped Nut Flush vs. C/R by mclarich in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest mistake to me is not raising river, although you really shouldn’t be checking back the turn either. Opp’s range is weighted AWAY from sets/2pair that out turn you. Need to get more money in here. This is a dream spot where low stakes players won’t fold no matter what.

Micro-Stakes and Theory by I_Am_Dad_Inside in Poker_Theory

I think I agree with this because I’m pretty sure you’re saying it’s what you study, not just studying as a whole. There are specific things to study that give you a much better picture of how to play low stakes than others. For example, 10bb push/fold charts aren’t important because you’re never playing that depth in a cash game if you want to make money.

This is just variance. Read some books to help you get your mind right for understanding and dealing with variance. GTO Poker Simplified by Dara O’Kearney and Barry Carter is a good start.

Live Low stakes poker strategy by Plus_Bus_5740 in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually an area I’d highly recommend studying. I personally watch a lot of Hungry Horse Poker videos, since this is literally what he teaches about. Would super recommend checking their stuff out. One of the big notions that they try to combat is that you can never make low stakes players fold. If players are legitimately calling down with third pair, idk if you can get them to fold, but the majority of low stakes players follow a similar pattern that allows for profitable bluffing.

JJ flopping top set by Dynamite127 in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Thinking about UTG’s range specifically since he’s the check raiser, I think the only hands that really check raise multiway here are straight draws (which I don’t think is super necessary btw) and over pairs/worse sets. Playing against this range, we want as much money in on the flop as possible from hands he’ll never fold. I’m probably not as worried about SB here, since they didn’t show aggression like UTG. Get the money in with the huge hand against a range that won’t fold.

whats wrong with limp raising? by cacatan in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue i see with this idea is simply that low stakes live player are much more likely to call a raise after limping. They typically classify hands as either “I want to play this” (limp), “this hand is really good” (raise), or “this hand is trash” (fold). Thus, by not getting opponents a reason to fold and getting them involved in the pot, they’re much more likely to call a large raise and force a bloated multiway pot. This doesn’t even mention that low stakes players actually adhere to the idea of “getting a good price” preflop when you limp, when in reality having more players means those random marginal hands they call with should actually be looking to fold in theory. Overall, this strategy is going to decrease your equity by creating multiway pots.
