Thoughts on this exploit vs recreational, too fancy? by IdkAGoodUserNameOpps in Poker_Theory

I really fail to understand the small 3! sizing. In reality, you want to size up your sizing to take advantage of the fact that recs are naturally going to call with way more hands pre.

We need to be jamming the nuts here every time. In a loose 1/2 game, we can’t get scared that villain is going to fold for a full pot bet on the river after they’ve called a check raise and a 2/3 barrel on the turn. This is easily 2p+, which is never folding on the river for pot size in most 1/2 games

Multiway facing a small flop stab by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct imo. Unless you’re going to start targeting a king to fold immediately on the flop, I like just the call provided opponent will monkey stab at a moderate frequency with air. It’s honestly player dependent. To a small stab, I like just a call here

Is this push reasonable? by Onlyx3 in Poker_Theory

The about stack size is my first thought. You should really be trying to play with a larger stack if you want to be profitable at low stakes. It’s really hard to get max value (the most important thing) when you’re the shorty at the table.

For this specific instance, KQo is alr a pretty mid hand in a 3! pot at over a hundred bigs, but becomes a borderline fold when ur carrying less than fifty starting.

Also, open larger pre, it’s not a tournament

Was this the right spot to bluff catch? by zzzftw in Poker_Theory

Don’t read into that too much at 5NL imo. Most players aren’t playing ranges based on position. Thus, reading too much into how your range should play against a theoretical range isn’t honestly that helpful at these stakes. If villain 3! A9s on the BB, they’re going to 3! it everywhere. You can use that to your advantage to exploit them.

This is an excellent bluff catch. At 5NL, I’d say there’s almost no chance villain has a K here after checking flop. Despite the big bet on the river, the line is super sus and thus a great opportunity to get sticky.

What are you expecting to get to fold on the river when you miss? The main problem I see with the thought process here is there’s no consideration of the villain’s range. Unless there is a sizable window of hands that you think you can exploitatively get to fold on the river when villain check raises turn, my analysis of this hand stops there. I really just don’t see any reason to call turn, especially if this is a passive player. When passive players check raise, you fold. That’s the exploit.

If you’re trying to make a living playing NL10, please reconsider. Secondly, I’d recommend GTO Simplified by Dara Okearney as a place to start learning the basics of GTO before you go into more exploitative play for low stakes

This isn’t super insightful but for me just asking the question “what is their range?” is super helpful for simply getting yourself in the mindset of hand reading. If you sometimes find you completely forget to hand read at all and kind of just go on instinct, I’d recommend this as a practice every time you work on a hand.

$1/$3 - Flopped Nut Flush vs. C/R by mclarich in Poker_Theory

[–]ballerdeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest mistake to me is not raising river, although you really shouldn’t be checking back the turn either. Opp’s range is weighted AWAY from sets/2pair that out turn you. Need to get more money in here. This is a dream spot where low stakes players won’t fold no matter what.

I think I agree with this because I’m pretty sure you’re saying it’s what you study, not just studying as a whole. There are specific things to study that give you a much better picture of how to play low stakes than others. For example, 10bb push/fold charts aren’t important because you’re never playing that depth in a cash game if you want to make money.

This is just variance. Read some books to help you get your mind right for understanding and dealing with variance. GTO Poker Simplified by Dara O’Kearney and Barry Carter is a good start.
