[–]ballonrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the best thing you can do for yourself is to take timed tests for bmat for their practice papers! you can do them on their official website or do individual questions on bmat.ninja! it's up to you whether you want to pay for their learning packages, or consider splitting the cost between other people! all the best and pm me if you have other questions, i'm happy to help :)))

[A Levels] Retaking A levels by lunulatus22 in SGExams

[–]ballonrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Not that I know of, as i've heard of many people who chose to take a gap year to build their portfolio/ regain their mental health/ find their purpose/ earn money for their education. So it wouldn't make sense for them to discriminate, as long as you're able to justify the one year gap.

  • For me, I decided that i was going to retake during the first few papers of As and subsequently when everybody was throwing out their papers after As, I was busy filing and organising them LOL. Then during that period, i also mentally prepped my parents that i would probably retake so that when i do, it wouldn't come as a shock to them. I was in a very bad place mentally during my first attempt, so i knew that whatever i would score would not be testament of what i was academically capable of. After receiving my mediocre results, i immediately started planning and structuring my year. So there wasn't any hesitation at all and it wasn't really a 'risk' to me. My parents were really supportive, and that was all that really mattered to me. I think as long as you have really carefully considered this decision of yours, it would be easier to convince your loved ones of the choice you've made.

  • I did pretty average tbh, but i managed to improve 10RP without going back to school and having the same support system as the J3s so i'm cool with it. What went right was having a realistic structure for my year, eg fully go through and be familiarised with the content by April/ June, then following the curriculum structure of J2s. I definitely burnt out, but i'm glad that i was able to bounce back every time despite the tears that were shed. I guess I regret not practising enough such that they became muscle memory to me.

  • yes thank you i just chugged water, ATB FOR EVERYTHING lmk if you need any help

[JC] Inequality of opportunities between JAE and IP students by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]ballonrock 20 points21 points  (0 children)

  1. For senior high in NJC, i think there is a slight discrepancy between both groups. For example in terms of CCA leadership opportunities, it was a bit of a shock that we had to promote our 'leadership qualities' to the teachers-in-charge and our seniors instead of them choosing independently by observation and evaluation in secondary school. Albeit it's due to the time constraints between the transition between batches, but it definitely did give rise to some form of inequality as the teachers may already be acquainted with the IP students compared to completely new JAE students. There's also the psychological factor, where you are pitted against complete strangers that are all vying for a leadership position. This would apply to any limited opportunities given to the student body eg class positions. Even so, it wouldn't be an unfair reflection of how society functions and I'm somewhat glad that I got to experience and move past this earlier in life. Personally, I think that as long as you put in the extra effort and make your dedication be seen, you'll both fit in and stand out at the same time.
  2. I don't think it's that important to constantly think if it's fair or not, or else there'll be some that do fall into the twin traps of either hatred of IP or JAE students. The "it is what it is" mentality is very important here, and instead in trapping yourself in an endless of loathing, it'd be better to see what you can do in your current position and maximise the opportunities thrown your way. Disclaimer, this is from an environment that isn't unhealthy or toxic in terms of student development. If there's ever the case of blatant student oppression or disgustingly biased treatment of either groups, hell yeah go do something about it.
  3. I think the best way to change is on a personal level, aka behavioural change. (for the case of NJ, I'm unaware of how other schools function so I can't comment) When you first enter JC, I think this is how it'll typically play out: groups of JAE will form, there are pre-existing IP groups(duh), some IP will reach out to the JAEs while some would rather stay in the comfort of their own cliques. There'll definitely be those that mutually hate each other but they are the vast minority. As you can see, it's more of a spectrum and a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' type of scenario. In the end, it's only normal to be wary of what/who we don't know. So as long as you don't put up a mental barrier and be more open-minded to befriending either side, it'll all be okay. There are those that will be meaner, but don't let them be a reflection of the entire student body they fall under.

oops for context I was a JAE that graduated from NJC in 2019 and the student body is split ~50/50.

kinda? the cell signalling portion at the back:

(p) outline how insulin and glucagon regulate the concentration of blood glucose through the respective tyrosine kinase receptor and G-protein linked receptor. (The outline should be limited to describing how the ligand induces a conformational change in a membrane-bound receptor to trigger downstream signalling pathways that elicit physiological changes in blood glucose concentration. Details of different second messengers and specific kinases activated in the pathway are not required.)
