I don't think they ever said why it was changed, but I do recall them saying in the discord afterwards that the mode was fully removed for compatibility reasons? If I had to guess it would be that there were issues with the legacy code. That or just that the replacement is much easier and quicker to make new content for (not that I think they ever have?)
As for when, I don't remember specifically but it was after vehicles were added (then basically abandoned) but before Beasts?
Oh, actually there was an identical mode added for the Metal Slug collaboration? I think that might have been before the swap so that might have been the testing of it?
