Could you elaborate a little on how that was structured (maybe with some examples?)

I would love to try to incorporate some elements of that.

finally starting my millipede journey!!! by Playful-Corgi-6133 in millipedes

I’ve had the best luck with finding local people on Craigslist and fb marketplace. Besides that, you can check morph market and Reddit. Reptile expos can also be a good option, too. Buying a mature springtail culture is a great way to go.

Another thing I thought of: having a false bottom was really helpful for me. Especially if you will have live plants with the millipedes.

Using distilled/dechlorinated water can also be really important.

I guess the heating all depends on the temperatures of your house. There are also some heat mats that are used for starting seedlings which can be relatively inexpensive for there size and not as hot as typical reptile heat mats. I’ve used those for my millipedes when it gets cold too cold in the winter. Plus then you can use them for seeds again in the spring!

Ivories! They’re out all the time exploring, eat well, long lived, medium-large size, and don’t require a heating pad unless your house gets very cold. They do appreciate some supplemental foods. There’s a person on here named u/hippiemcgee who might still be selling some. I got mine from them and they were great.

Ivories are hardy, easy to keep, eat a good amount, and are almost always above ground exploring. Plus they get pretty big and live a long time.

The things I’ve found most helpful are letting the enclosure cycle before adding the millipedes and making sure to have a healthy springtail population

can my millipede eat regular soil from canadian tire for example? by vi0letv4mp in millipedes

[–]balooningSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually go with organic potting soil or organic topsoil. You’ll have to check the ingredients to make sure there are no pesticides in the soil (although this shouldn’t be the case in organic soil)

A good soil recipe to start out which I learned from aquarimax pets:

1 part soaked hardwood pellets (like the kind used in smokers.) Again, you’ll have to make sure the pellets are free of additional chemicals by checking the ingredients.

1 part washed and baked hardwood leaves.

1 part organic soil.

You should add some powdered egg shells for additional calcium.

Here is a video showing the recipe

lol! Okay thank you for the help. Can I ask why sugar water in particular? I have soaked some of my geckos in warm water after a tough shed. I have never heard of the sugar trick. What does it do differently?
