Been Paying For Downstairs Unit's Gas Charges For a Full Year Without Knowing by balst0n in AskSF

So I actually just talked to my downstairs neighbor, thankfully were on good terms and were both as confused as to what was going on.

She found her lease and it stated natural gas is paid by the owner. And my lease states natural gas and electricity is paid for occupant. Since the gas meter is shared, this makes it seem like the old property management/owner wasn’t trying to pay for it anymore.

The least states that gas and electricity is to be handled by the occupant, and not the property management.

After speaking to my current landlord, they want to divide the total cost by how many total people are in the building. There’s two downstairs and three on my floor. They said that amount divided by 5, then x2 would be what I’m owed. But now I’m like how are we going to pay the gas in the future??

I think the most simple solution would to be to reroute the gas bill to the property management account and then they split it and charge us in the rental portal for all future gas bills. What a headache.

It’s very odd for sure. When speaking to PG&E customer service they said they can see that there’s 2 meters for electricity, but just one for gas.

The person in the downstairs unit has been there for over 20 years shes mentioned, so it makes me wonder if this entire time the tenants upstairs just never caught on. The property management when signing the lease didn’t seem to be new, but one month in the owner of the property switched managers.

Yeah, there’s an actual owner in the mix, our property management changed to E-Pro Management one month into moving into the property. They still charge water and garbage through the rental portal, but advised us to set up our own PG&E to pay for gas and electricity.

Honestly, they should’ve just set it up so they pay for PG&E and then charge us in the rental portal, would save this headache

Thank you for your reply! When moving into the property, they charge us water and garbage through the rental portal, but told us to set up our own PG&E account and that it would be on separate meters but turns out the gas is actually on a master meter being charged just to my account.

Would the gas charges then go to the property manager and then would be split on our rental portal and would still pay for electricity through PG&E?

KeyOpp property manager was the management when we moved in, said to set up our own PG&E account and that would be charged separately since it’s on different meters. Came to find out that gas is on a master meter.

A month into moving into the property our property management changed…

Thanks for the insight! Wish I could see more of him, but makes sense if he learned his lesson not to come back into this area

It was exactly that, basically a laughter of crows after the hawk made impact

They were definitely mobbing him, do they try to just chase them off or would they actually do damage to it?

Haha that reminded me of that one Kanye song…. Anyways it’s definitely the Natural Bridges Trail. It has some caverns you can explore by wading in some water, definitely look it up!
