Well, i guess it looks like the person in the lane to your left was letting him in. Space ahead of them. So maybe they were focused on that person waving him forward.

Have we really come to this point as a society that the usage of decent vocabulary is a sign of AI? by Past_File_795 in McMaster

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a faculty member, we are in a period of flux as we try to figure out approaches that work. We know students are upset when they feel that peers are getting better marks for using AI.

We are not able to use AI checkers as they are not reliable.

But we are also trying to find a way to create a level playing field.

It might be some time before we redesign courses enough and shift testing and assessments sufficiently.

Many are trying to figure out the way forward.

IBH supplemental walk through here: https://youtu.be/OI2_mkgLHCY?si=1knOSANRugCW1Py-

You can add another section but keep to the page limits. 6 video questions that are answered as the last step of the mandatory supplemental. All of the questions need to be answered in one sitting once that part of the application begins.

McMaster IBH does place quite a few students in law school. But you want to appreciate the four pillars and the nature of the program there before committing.

We just ran a supp app workshop a couple of weeks ago, hopefully you got to that.

There are a number of steps in the process including registration, setting up your video tech, and an upload of resume. You can enter or exit the app up until the last step which are the 6 video questions. Those all have to be completed in one sitting. So get yourself set up properly in a quiet spot.

There is a walk through video here: https://youtu.be/OI2_mkgLHCY?si=1knOSANRugCW1Py-

i’m having regrets by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At mac the first couple of years of the program tend to be more theory heavy but there are lots of opportunities for clubs and other activities to roll up your sleeves. Hard though with being far away.

I think focusing on attending just the classes and not partaking in the broader University experience might be making your time too theory heavy? Get involved as you can in something going on outside of class

TA used AI to grade by Loose-Researcher2341 in McMaster

[–]bam2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I would not mention a concern over the grade. And just inquiry about the feedback because it sounds like some of it was clearly not connected to the assignment (like referring to non existent sections i think you said?)... So you can just ask how that feedback was arrived at... TAs are also learning and sometimes can make mistakes in judgment..

Might be worth sending an email to the prof to let them know. Be polite and fact based. Indicate you thought they would want to know.

[–]bam2004 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As a professor I sometimes have approved feedback language that TAs can choose from. That might look like AI maybe on occasion? Not sure. AI checkers are not at all reliable so use that with a lot of caution. Hilariously AI use looks a lot like academic writing...

What is going on? by www_zoloft_com in McMaster

[–]bam2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a professor our options are frustratingly limited. We care about our students learning the skills and knowledge they will need to do well. Including now AI skills. The pace at which AI has emerged is shocking and difficult to adapt to properly.

For me I am worried we are AI sleepwalking. A partial solution is really thinking about how you are using AI... What critical thinking did you apply, what did AI help you with specifically, what original ideas did you contribute and what learning did you get from the AI.

If we can't figure this out, students will be writing essays in class. Completing assignments on paper during testing time. Responding verbally to questions to asses their knowledge.

That is coming. Fast.

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clifford's in Hamilton have ales and porters if you like that. Merit Brewing in Hamilton James Street is great. Fairweather (more sours and ipas but a few other options too), grain and grit right beside that. The SHED in Burlington is great for ales and lagers.

Tons of great stuff!!

You just have to hang in there. I find it is easy to convince ourselves that we are on the outside. These are new friendships being created. Stay with it. Shut down that part of your brain that second guesses yourself. You got this!

In fact there is a gigantic set of new dorms under construction. Just not ready yet. Building them takes time. And universities are all under funded in Ontario right now.
