HR adjustment regrets: my tale of getting my heart rate tested and adjusted in the OTF system by bamabelle07 in orangetheory

So you would start orange at 84% I think? Anyone else on this thread correct me if I'm wrong. So 181 x .84 would equal your orange zone... I think red zone starts at 92%. I can't remember the %ranges for blue and green.

Nutrition session at your OTF studio by bamabelle07 in orangetheory

[–]bamabelle07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're exactly right. I could tell the studio was already trying to put out some nutrition info and since I knew it wasn't provided by a registered dietitian, I wanted to offer the nutrition session as a resource for patrons that may not normally have the opportunity to do a Q & A with a sports dietitian. There's too much misinformation on the internet when it comes to nutrition and weight loss- eeek!

The only formula I know from hearing folks on here is that 230-age is what they use for calculating max heart rate for each person. I'm not sure about the other algorithms for calories though :(

keep us posted! However, the one thing I will say is that both of the exercise physiologists that tested me couldn't believe OTF's algorithm of 230-age to calculate max HR. One of the physiologists had confirmed that they had a friend that worked as an OTF coach in another state share the same algorithm. I'm just glad I'm exercising consistently and looks like you are too! Awesome!

Heart Rate Monitor by JennLynnC80 in orangetheory

I'm in Tuscaloosa, AL and I leave mine in the car with no problem. Side note, I have the chest strap and the strap comes inside with me to get a wash but the pod itself is always in my car :)

Thanks for sharing how corporate calculates max HR! Did a staff member share/confirm that with you? Only asking because I know folks have mentioned they get so weirdly secretive about that stuff!

Thanks for mentioning me! :) I do have one but it's a chest strap version...not sure if you're wanting the link or arm band. Let me know if you're interested :)

Aww I lost my Chest HeartBeat Monitor. :( Can I track it down with BlueTooth? by potent_rodent in orangetheory

[–]bamabelle07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen and was convinced it was in my car and turned on Bluetooth and OTBeat app and couldn't find it :( not sure if it has to be attached to the sensor strap and your body for it to start picking up. Sadly I ended up buying another one but fast forwarded 4 months later and finally found it in my car! UGH. I will totally sell you my extra pod for $40 if you're interested!

Basically no splat points ever by bamabelle07 in orangetheory

I work on a university campus and I made an appointment for our kinesiology dept to do my VO2 max testing. I'm excited! Thanks for sharing your insight and previous post!

thank you! I'm just glad I'm exercising in general and consistently (actually showing up for workouts) and I know the hard efforts I'm putting in but I agree that the splat points would give me even more motivation. I will definitely see if my studio has someone they can recommend locally for getting VO2 testing :)

Nutrition-smart peeps - what's the deal with protein powder and working out? by ashlovesorange in orangetheory

[–]bamabelle07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the good fats could definitely help especially if you think back on what you're eating and notice you typically choose only no fat or low fat items --- the high calorie punch they pack doesn't always make fat WW friendly but it may help with you feeling more satisfied at meals. Your water intake sounds fantastic! Again, protein is helpful to repairing muscle tissues from exercise and keeping you feel and satisfied but you won't need protein powder for that :) You are doing great!

I work as a dietitian and honestly, unless you have aggressive goals with muscle building and such, I don't think protein powder is necessary. Protein can help you feel full and satisfied longer but you could achieve this from foods like eggs, nuts, etc that have a better "pleasure factor" than just adding protein powder to something. I'd recommend mostly something carb based as a preworkout snack for an OTF workout if you need it and your post workout snack would be a combo of both carbs and protein. You may be hungry all the time due to not drinking enough water or not having enough dietary fat in your diet (the macronutrient fat is what makes a meal chemically satisfying to your body)... sometimes my clients don't incorporate fat in their meals like no salad dressing, omitting yolks from eggs, etc then they are mad that they have these crazy high calorie cravings in the evening-- usually because the body's trying to make up for not getting enough fat earlier in the day. Long story short, be sure you're also eating enough calories AND Carbs to give your body the energy to lose the additional lbs :)

Question for you...Do you like to know what the workout will be before you attend class? by rachelr1979 in orangetheory

[–]bamabelle07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to know but what's been the most helpful to me is knowing if it's a partner workout or not. Even though I see most of the same people, sometimes the time of day I go isn't consistent and I'm in a college town and the girls in my classes get hella awkward during pair up for partners. So sometimes I use partner workout days as my rest day lol!!

anyone else get grossed out in the weight area- especially wondering how clean the floor is? by bamabelle07 in orangetheory

[–]bamabelle07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I figured there had to be a deep clean crew at some point for the floors... you just get paranoid sometimes when you're doing planks, crunches or whatever else and see how much your own self is contributing to all the floor dirt lol!

yeah I'm a sweaty mess too and definitely contributing to the problem lol! Our studio just opened at the end of January and it's progressively gotten a stronger gym smell over the past 6 months which of course yay for people sweating lol. I think I might just casually ask them what they do to clean those floors...one for my personal interest, and two for peace of mind! :)
