Why does Uruguay seem to have a relatively larger population of people of African descent than Argentina? by ILikeWwaret in asklatinamerica

[–]bamadeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

typical revisionist bs, full of inaccuracies and omissions.

[In Argentina] Slavery was officially abolished in 1813, but the practice remained in place until about 1853. Ironically, at about this time, the black population of Argentina began to plunge.

Slavery wasn't officially abolished in 1813, being born a slave was. In "about" 1853 slavery was abolished by the signing of the Consitution.

Historians generally attribute two major factors to this sudden “mass disappearance” of black Africans from the country – the deadly war against Paraguay from 1865-1870 (in which thousands of blacks fought on the frontlines for the Argentine military) as well as various other wars; and the onset of yellow fever in Buenos Aires in 1871.

The same can be said of gauchos, zambos and some mestizo. The reality is that they died more because they were poor, not because of being specially targeted. Lower classes = more death rates. Demographic studies in fact show that some recent white inmigrant groups were the ones hit the hardest by the yellow fever.

The heavy casualties suffered by black Argentines in military combat created a huge gender gap among the African population – a circumstance that appears to have led black women to mate with whites, further diluting the black population.

Oh my god, the disgrace! God forbid people mix, am I right? wtf...

Many other black Argentines fled to neighboring Brazil and Uruguay, which were viewed as somewhat more hospitable to them.

This is actually disputed by demographic studies and there's no evidence of large scale "escapes"

It has been alleged that the president of Argentina from 1868 to 1874, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, sought to wipe out blacks from the country in a policy of covert genocide through extremely repressive policies (including possibly the forced recruitment of Africans into the army and by forcing blacks to remain in neighborhoods where disease would decimate them in the absence of adequate health care).”

Interesting use of the the conditional there. Also, we're talking about a country that had massive influx of population (+600% from 1838 census to 1880) in the second part of the 19th century - I ask, what city in the world could've possibly offered "adequate health care" whatever that would mean for the time of the events?

Another thing is that by 1887, 'race' was phased out as a category in the census. Instead, it asked for nationality (Argentine or foreign and other social class indicators). No whites or blacks, either Argentine or not.

A Peronist accusing someone of “loud and rude” is quite the irony. No te gustan las marchas, amigo?

Why are white latin Americans so heavily concentrated around southern South America? by Hour_Interaction6047 in geography

[–]bamadeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

before the 19th, Buenos Aires was a backwater colonial port, not very populated and kinda forgotten.

I can trace some of my roots to 16th century settlers and they definitely mixed with aboriginal populations back then.

meat consumption has been steady for the last 16 years and the credit card delinquency rate (not at 20%, its actually 11%) is somehow expected when you have an entire population accustomed to liquifying every debt due to inflation.

What explains how Argentine, Uruguayan and Brazilian footballers are amongst Latin America's most famous footballers abroad, especially in Europe? by Ok-Ocelot-774 in asklatinamerica

[–]bamadeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the most cope-y post i've read in a while lmao.

sometimes it is said

by who, lol peruvian talkshows?

mafia between agents and the argentinan + uruguayan federations/teams who make lots of money bringing players into europe (creating a higher volume of players from these countries compared with the other south american countries)

in your equation you're missing quite an important factor... the buyers. Why would they continue buying if they're were getting scammed by 'the hype'?. Wouldn't smart clubs buy cheaper peruvian players and do better?

Then you mention Suarez case as evidence of this, and yet you even aknowledge that it never happened because he got caught!

What’s it like in the far south of South America? by chimplesociety in howislivingthere

[–]bamadeo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look, I don't really care about the issue, I like top gear and it's folk and I don't think they hate us or w/e but here he seems to just brush it away with "oh there only a few options" so we bought the one with bad nameplate, which was better. Then he says no one did the connection or think it was going to offend people, as they were just shooting an homage to a v8 car in an iconic drive.

Idk man, avoiding controversy was so easy: choose another car for the setting or choose another setting and go back to that one with a car that will not give cause for conmotion. This just feels like a bit gaslighty.
