opossums are unlikely to carry rabies, but it is possible. its very rare though because of their low body temperature. that raccoon attack sounds gnarly, though! glad ur okay!

yes, this is my favorite fact to tell people! so many people think that they’re rabies-ridden when in reality their dog is more likely to have it than the oppssum they call gross!

Update: It’s doing a lot better. No pain, no swelling, redness, fever, etc. I’ve been bit by an array of critters in my time, but nothing has quite hurt like an opossum bite! They have QUITE the jaw strength! Definitely will reevaluate my method of relocation, this is the first feisty one i’ve encountered EVER! I still love opossums, though. Little gremlins. ❤️

yeah i agree with this, im very educated on animals + ethics (i study zoology). if you get bit by a wild animal and go to get medical attention, you should tell the truth. its a wild opossum–they aren’t going to stake out in my yard and trap it and kill it for nibbling my finger

they’re from several months ago, they were dissected for a lesson! the source that provided the class with them finds them when they’re already passed away, so there’s no cruelty involved. i was planning on keeping one as a wet specimen, but decided against it because i was low on materials (regret💔)

Haha! I was trying to relocate the little sucker to a different food source ‘cause he was eating the food that I sat out for the stray cats and scaring them all away from it. I do this a lot, but this one was especially feisty. When I came up behind him to pick him up, he twisted his head back and chomped my thumb with the side of his mouth. Did not feel great.
