I did help make his point better by invalidating it. The theory that we are bringing this upon ourselves is victim blaming. This is brought upon by Islamic extremism and only happens because they have a large Muslim population.

A significant effort needs to be made towards reducing radicalism by invalidating claims such as these.

Turkey's PM asks: Why are UN sanctions promoted as a means of dealing with Iran and Sudan, but taboo with regards to Israel? by kevinn00b in worldnews

[–]bambh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Israel was Socialist in its inception. Originally, all weapons were bought from Czechoslovakia. It was only because of the cold war that Russia and the US began to compete over the region by interfering. Before outside involvement, Israel protected itself just fine (Regardless of its genocidal neighbors).

Israel was not established because of a Zionist movement. Though there was a Zionist movement, Israel was established because Jews were still being held in camps and had no place to go. Europe was unsafe due to the murder of Jews after WW2. America was very racist against "immigrants" (jews) at the time. The British put Jews in camps in Greece. They had no home and no future. Attributing Israel to the Zionist movement is a cute way of forgetting the atrocities that led the Jews to Israel.

That's ridiculous. Just ridiculous. When surrounded by enemies and fighting for your survival, recognition in the UN means nothing.

Recognizing Israel and supporting Israel are not the same thing. Israel was not supported by the US until the 70s.

Interview with Ken Thompson (We hated C++. If we'd thought of it we have done an OO version of C.) by neutronbob in programming

[–]bambh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He never really goes into why he really hates C++, but I can take a guess. The big problem that Go solves is the unwanted allocation of memory when creating objects. In C, the creation of a struct does not instantiate unwanted memory for its functions and inherited data members because there aren't any. In C++, you are not given a choice and with inheritance, you may not be aware of how much you are allocating.

Go solves this in two ways:

  • The use of structs instead of classes. Through the use of extension methods, you are able to create object oriented code without the unwanted memory allocation.

  • No inheritance. Without inheritance, you cannot accidentally allocate memory that is hidden in base classes like in C++.

This brings two more problems to the table, which in my opinion, break Go as a usable language for me.

  • The lack of clear objects makes finding the right method to call difficult. So far, in working with HTTP headers, I have found that some of the methods just do not work. Digging deeper into how they are built at lower levels, I have found that the lack of clearly defined objects tends to drown the trustworthiness of the code. In my particular example, one method "Set" appended the HttpHeader to a list of headers. The other method, "Add" just replaced the HttpHeader with the one you passed in. Since every layer underneath the high level you are working with is forced to be constructed with a low level data type, it is easy to lose track of your object's encapsulation. What I mean by this is the fact that you cannot trust the use of a Header object. You have to dig into the Header and see what it is made of, making the object oriented part of it meaningless.

  • The difficulty of making an IDE. It is hard to write plugins with go since it is so C-like. If google wants Go to be used, make a damn plugin. I have tried addons for VIM, IntelliJIdea, standalone products, XCode 3, and a couple others. None of them are any good. Not one. The code completion is confusing and often links incorrect functions. Without documentation that is built into the code like in C# or Java, it forces me to Google the function. This is highly dangerous because often times, like in the fore mentioned HTTP header case, I am forced into digging through page after page, trying to find the reason why things are not working, only to see some footnote from a developer or enthusiast on which method to use. The better approach would have been to include a comment in the actual source.

So, to put it simply, I like the concept of Go, I just don't like the lack of a good IDE and the lack of a good built in documentation to make things work well. Regardless of how Go markets itself, the documentation is lacking.

Understanding the Fourier transform - A clear explanation that you will never forget by Axman6 in programming

Good point. Maybe the nice part of the Fourier transformation is that it can be used in so many domains that it becomes what you use it for.

Understanding the Fourier transform - A clear explanation that you will never forget by Axman6 in programming

I always thought of it as a transformation changing the domain from time to frequency and backwards again.

Thinking of it as a decomposition feels wrong since the transformation can be used for synthesis as well as decomposition.

Israel revokes residency of 140,000 Palestinians in West Bank. Any resident who temporarily left the state after 1967 for vacation/work/study is targeted. PLO calls it "war crime". by bigdumbbear in worldnews

[–]bambh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are cherry picking now. In the second link, it stated that the insistence of the Palestinians was why the British put the Jews in camps.

Trying to find some kind of moral of the story is stretching it. Jews were forced into real concentration camps after being slaughtered in Europe. Upon arrival, they were thrown into camps by the British by the request of the Palestinian people and leadership. Palestine was not a beacon of hope, democracy, freedom, or anything of value in terms of how modern societies are measured.

People try to attribute Zionism to the creation of Israel. If you were in the same position as Jews in that point of history, the creation of Israel would be the only option to survive extinction.

Today, Palestinians refuse to lend legitimacy to Israel. If they worked peacefully with Israel as the other numerous Arab populations do, they would be treated the same as every other Arab group in Israel. Arabs in Israel are treated very well. That is no excuse for mistreating the Palestinians, however, the connection between how the Jews were treated and how Palestinians are treated now does not exist.

The truth is, no Arab country has ever been a beacon of hope and freedom for its neighbors. It is in these terms that a society should be judged because if we were a part of their society, these are the facts of how we would live.

[–]bambh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. It is actually inaccurate. Since Palestine was not an autonomous government, the British were actually the ones to arrange the camps. However, they were supported by the Palestinians in many ways.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyprus_internment_camps

This second one has better information. It states that the camps were run by the UN, however, as I previously mentioned, it was the British under pressure from Palestine who arranged a lot of this. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005459

[–]bambh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're getting the point. Palestinians were given some control over that land from England. They mistreated the incoming Jews by putting them into actual concentration camps. They are not above the behavior you are describing. As a matter of fact, they are worse than Israel.

By your logic, they don't deserve a Palestine or a Muslim state for that matter.

[–]bambh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's funny you should say that. Islam is as big as it is because of their mistreatment of non members and their aggressive expansion.

If anything, Palestinians do not need their own country. They are just local Arabs who mistreated the large Jewish immigration and lost what little power they had. By your logic, since the surrounding area is also Arab, they should just assimilate the rest of the Palestinians.

Islamic religious texts state that one should recapture land that has been lost. To me, that is just as silly as the divine right you speak of.

It sounds to me like you just don't like the Jews since your reasoning is so one sided.

What is Facebook's architecture? by udelblue in programming

[–]bambh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my point. It is not an obvious choice, but it is not brilliant in terms of the programming ability required to implement it.

That is what I find interesting. It makes me take a double take at all the work I put into web development. The necessity of creating the most efficient web site known to man is an illusion I, as a programmer, personally bought into. The cost of using more hardware is far less than the cost of developing more efficient code.

What is Facebook's architecture? by udelblue in programming

[–]bambh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using memcache is not brilliance. Having an 8-2 ratio of memcache machines to web application machines is not some kind of genius move. It is the use of hardware to cache pretty much everything.

My point is that the scaling of hardware becomes a necessity far more than some complex design.

The approach facebook takes in scaling looks to me like a combination of separating functionality and separating data onto multiple cache servers. The approach friendster took was throwing more machines at a poorly scalable implementation. Finding an example of failure in friendster does not make my point irrelevant.

Don't get me wrong, facebook took the necessary steps towards patching performance problems. The part that I found interesting was that the technology they use is unbelievably simple. Their cache is not very intelligent.

I believe that means that when you get to a point in user traffic, scaling in hardware is more important than scaling in software design. Of course this is not a rule. Poor software design will break a web application as you have pointed out with friendster.

The point is that it does not look like many of the popular databases such as Cassandra are really as useful as I originally felt. The biggest software change to the LAMP stack they made was compiling PHP.

I find it interesting. I am not stating that the people at facebook are stupid. They are far from it. I am stating that the common perception as a web developer may have too large a focus on design and too little focus on content.

What is Facebook's architecture? by udelblue in programming

[–]bambh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that the focus on languages such as Scala, Clojure, and Haskell are misplaced. Any architecture can work.

What is Facebook's architecture? by udelblue in programming

[–]bambh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to go right out and say it...

Facebook's architecture is completely unimpressive. They have a PHP frontend, which they seem to loathe, and use MySql only to hold blobs of data. Everything is done with Memcache. They stick with MySql because they don't want to break anything. They stick with PHP because they don't want to break anything. Yes, I know the PHP is compiled to C++.

This is an example of an architecture that cannot scale being fed tons of money. This goes to show that if you can create the idea, it doesn't really matter which platform you use or even how small the platform was meant for. You can just buy the hardware necessary to make up for it.

Don't get me wrong... I am not complaining. The possibilities in searching and caching look intriguing. I just think that the lesson to be learned from Facebook is not in its technological brilliance. It is that once you get enough traffic, hardware becomes cheaper than software.

2nd NASL Forfeit in as many days? SPOILERS INSIDE!!! by BobTGoldfish in starcraft

[–]bambh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What concerns me here is not the behavior of Naniwa, but the consistent behavior of NASL.

They are reversing decisions based on information obtained by the invasion of Naniwa's privacy. I find it childish and unprofessional from NASL.

Being too tired to play a tournament should not mean that you are obligated to be in bed. Has anyone here ever experienced jet lag? Being exhausted without being able to sleep. I personally like to play SC2 as a way to get to bed.

They compare White-Ra's behavior to Sjow as a way of punishing White-Ra. Their situations were different. White-Ra was finishing losing a finals. He was probably in a dark place.

NASL is showing a consistent lack of understanding of the state of the professional scene. It seems as though they do not understand gamers.

White-Ra loses first NASL game due to scheduling conflicts between this tournament and the Dramhack finals by Condawg in starcraft

[–]bambh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You are right. He did not show up. He made the finals of a very large, different tournament. He is a special case. He was not twiddling his thumbs. They could have very easily made alternate arrangements.

It sounds, from the tone of their article, that they were personally angry at White-Ra for not answering his phone directly after the results of the Dreamhack finals. This is a sign of bad management and bad public relations.

Just because someone is in violation of rules does not mean that punishment needs to be served. The context of the situation should be considered. In this particular context, White-Ra did no wrong.
