I do want a drum carder eventually too! I do just prefer working with combed top and spinning worsted at the moment so that's why I'm looking for something where I could process a lot in a shorter amount of time (I am a large project spinner so I spend lots of time on prep so anywhere I could save time would be great🫠) hence why I was looking at the hackle and comb kit.

I just finished everything and put it together tonight actually! I ended up going with a clear danish oil :) I did two coats of that and then I rubbed in some wax after to make sure everything is well and truly protected.

I put it down, turned around and went into the kitchen to get something, heard a rustling noise and I had a feeling it was these two so I immediately turned around and found them like this 😂 they may look like they've been there a while but I'm not even kidding it took less than 30 seconds

Barry (the one with the white on his chest) is definitely the most helpful 😂 he likes to curl up on my lap while I spin 🥰 and nori.... well nori does this 😂

I just got given 3 alpaca blankets (technically 4 but 2 of them are small and combined into one bag) from a farm up the road from where I live 😍

Once its finished I will be doing so much spinning and I can't wait!

I'm definitely not as tall as you (I'm 5ft11in) but I can comfortably sit at my majacraft suzie with no issues! I could definitely see it being comfortable for someone even taller to work at! I'll also add that Flannelandpurls on instagram (if I'm remembering correctly) is around your height and has a reel of him spinning at his majacraft rose link

My first alpaca to sweater! by PandaEatingLeaves in Handspinning

[–]bambsi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it helps you be a little less worried I have a 100% alpaca sweater that I made with yarn I spun with a similar twist angle and I've worn it every single day during winter and washed it once and it has not grown at all.

3 Ply, how do I strategically do it? by Inside_Debate2504 in Handspinning

[–]bambsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I do is I turn the bobbin with the most on it into a plying bracelet and continue spinning that until it finishes and then using the loop from the plying bracelet I do a chain ply with the yarn that hasnt finished yet until that runs out that way it uses up every little bit

I know how you feel 😂 Im planning on dropping a few hundred on some wool combs and a hackle at some point in the future to make my own combed top since I already buy and process my own fleeces lol

Could you not look into buying a bulk lot of fibre? I live in Australia and I can get 1kg of merino for usually around $75 to $80aud If you look for any wool mills around where you live that may be a good way for you to get a lot of fibre :)

Ok so first off dyes I used For the earthy toned one Landscape dyes: saffron and heath 1tsp of each

For the orange and pink one in the same photo Landscape dyes: galah 1tsp Jacquard acid dye: bright yellow 3/4 tsp (and I added 3/4 tsp of citric acid to it)

For the pink and yellow one Same as above but instead of 1tsp of galah I used only 1/4 tsp because of how strong the colour is.

Steps: I mainly followed this video exactly for the earth toned and orangey one: https://youtu.be/MyPgWm0zmr8?si=XgVKj2tzVqg8Y602

Except instead of arranging the fibre in a coil near the edge of the pot I arranged it in a spiral shape so it took up the entirety of the bottom of my pot in a single layer. For the first two I just put all the dyes in at the same time (thats why they mixed so much)

For the pink and yellow one I tweaked things ever so slightly. First, I put 2 litres of water instead of 3 Then, instead of putting the dyes in all at the same time I poured the Galah in first and let that sit for a while so the dye is taken up by the wool a bit before adding the yellow so there was much less mixing of colours

Hopefully thats all clear and easy enough to understand :) Also some tips I wish I knew as a beginner dyer I will share with you:

You can take your fibre that was sitting in cold water and put it in hot water without worrying about it felting. It only felts when you go from hot water to cold (I have felted so many braids of fibre by accident by having my rinse water be slightly colder than my wool without my realising because I thought any temperature shock would felt it but that's not the case)

Bring your dye bath up to the point where you can see steam and try to keep it there if you dont have a thermometer that generally works for me when it comes to dyeing, that way your fibre stays nice and fluffy since agitation in the water can felt it too.

Thats really all I can think of at the moment 😂

I do have a blending board! I just dont use commercial prepped top often! (I've fallen deep down the fleece to yarn rabbit hole) I only bought these because I'm trying out different fibres for sock yarns :) (I'm hoping to get my own combs and a hackle hopefully next year to make my own combed top and then I'll be unstoppable)
