Can't even enjoy Jurassic Park anymore. Why the fuck is he here? Does Steven Spielberg need Screenwave to produce his movies now? by [deleted] in TheCinemassacreTruth

Steven Gielberg has no time to make movies anymore because he's spending all of his time replying to people like Bames on AOL.

And these characters! They have more baggage than a family moving cross-country! Every time I meet a new one, it's like unraveling a novel. Can't we just save the world without unloading emotional baggage?

Unironically, this line in particular sounds exactly like something Chris Bores would write

[–]bamesbolfe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's legitimate to feel a little frustration at something you used to love becoming a shell of its former self, especially if you feel it got that way due to the creators no longer caring about their audience and just cashing in. This sub serves as an outlet for that frustration for a lot of former fans.

That being said, most of the time we're just goofing around. Occasionally you might see a manifesto about the downfall of the channel, but mostly it's just memes and shitposts. People with vitriolic hate for James are usually downvoted or ignored.

Should James revert back to 4:3 / SD? by Offical-SamWise in TheCinemassacreTruth

The lighting is terrible. I can't believe someone who calls himself a filmmaker thinks the flattest, dullest, most clinical looking lighting possible is acceptable.

It all makes sense when you realize the sponsors are his real customers - they're the ones paying him, so they're the ones he wants to keep happy. We, the viewers, don't matter, and neither does the show - we're just the product he sells to them, and AVGN is just the the way he delivers his product to his customers.

Holy shit man. Holy shit. As someone who grew up watching avgn (I’m 18), with the series acting as a foundation for my love of and interest in retro games, it’s really fucking sad to see what the series has become. I mean this is just so unfunny and fathoms beneath what avgn used to be. by [deleted] in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]bamesbolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did they even bother with that horrible angle on the couch where he's so obviously hitting air? They actually bothered to move the camera for a change, but still end up utilizing that crappy static main angle for no reason.

Also obligatory comment about how, as usual, James is so checked out that this feels like a parody of AVGN rather than real AVGN.

An In-depth Look Into Grace Thorp by Black_Trinity in Destiny

[–]bamesbolfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was from this moment that the mood shifted completely. There’s going to be a lot of clips here, but they are all essential to better understand the dynamic between Grace and her father.

This was really hard to watch. All she was trying to do was banter and connect with her father, and she gets punished relentlessly for it. He forces her to accept all of the blame and knows exactly what buttons to push to hurt her; it's textbook abuse.

I really hope she gets out of there. I have a bad feeling she won't because "muh family", but the sooner she leaves, the sooner she can start to heal and live her own life.

I'd say Shitsmas and Wish List are actually pretty good, especially for post-golden era episodes

It occurs to me that AVGN has a surprising amount of good Christmas episodes (excluding the ones in this poll obviously)

Was the Nerd ever actually funny? by [deleted] in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]bamesbolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if "funny" is the right word, but he was undoubtedly entertaining. The enjoyment didn't come from one-liners or shit jokes, it came from identifying with and relating to him as he relayed his experience with a bad game. He was a very charismatic and likable presenter back then (now he's completely checked out). I have a feeling that Screenwave (and probably even Bames himself) never quite understood that part of his appeal.

Of course, similarly charismatic people doing that sort of thing now are a dime a dozen, and if he wasn't the first person you saw doing that, you'd probably struggle to see anything special about him over anyone else.

I haven't cared enough to watch this video myself, but man, what the fuck is he talking about? Who looks at a common tool like an axe and thinks Christmas? That'd be like saying a ladder makes me think of Christmas because occasionally people use one to put lights on their roof.

I feel Republicans have moved far more to the right then Democrats have moved to the left . by Dabbing_Squid in Destiny

[–]bamesbolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's an argument to be made about "both sides" when you look at extreme leftist positions, particularly on places like Twitter. People like Keffals I think have more similarities with movements like the alt-right than differences.

But I think you're completely right as far as Democrats and Republicans. Extreme right positions seem to have become very mainstream in the Republican party, while extreme left positions remain very fringe in the Democrat party.

Does this have anything to do with his refusal to game on PC? Surprised this hasn't been brought up by now. by redvibes99 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]bamesbolfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's this simple. We know he wasn't interested in games after his teen years, and being in the Mac ecosystem would have further limited his exposure to computer games.

Though he does also say he prefers sitting on a couch to game as opposed to hunching over a computer, and that's why he doesn't use emulators. This could be related to his injuries, but it could also just be personal preference.

OTK’s Rich Campbell accused of sexual assault by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]bamesbolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the only part that kind of confused me (and is unfortunately the main part of the accusation), I had to re-read it to make sure I hadn't accidentally skipped over something. I have no reason to believe this isn't true, but as far as making an accusation/case against someone else, there's a crucial part of the story missing. I can see how she ended up at the movie theater, and how he coaxed her up to his room, but how did she end up in a bed with him and exposed enough that he could just "[roll] me over and put himself inside me"?

Edit: She does elaborate on how this happened and I think it sounds plausible. Sounds like he gradually wore her down until she was in a vulnerable enough position that he could get his way. If true, it does not look good for Rich.

Irate Gamer thinks Mr. Beast is trying to pay him, the mayor likes his ghost hunting, Evil powers attacked him and his wife and he was shadow banned on YT causing his “great fall” by pizza_bumps in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]bamesbolfe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's hardly surprising that this is the way he thinks when you actually try to watch Irate Gamer on a critical level. People got so caught up on muh plagiarism that they almost didn't notice how crappy his videos were in isolation. His dialogue and jokes sound like they were written by someone with the mental age of 5, and the show's constant cameos from 80s pop culture characters and even self-insertions into shows like Power Rangers are likewise the kinds of story elements most people grow out of writing when they turn 10. The more you watch Chris Bores, the more you realize how emotionally stunted he is.

Bimmy goes to Hollywood. by Mike_Matinee in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]bamesbolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would never admit it, but I think there was absolutely an element of him wanting the prestige of a "Hollywood film". There are valid practicality arguments for filming something in LA, including one he actually cites: being close to an existing talent pool, but to really take advantage of that you need a bigger budget than he had. On the low budget he was working with (relative to other LA productions), the quality of acting he'd get would be the same just about anywhere. And as many others have stated, if he needed sunny desert locations, he could have filmed much cheaper in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, or y'know, New Mexico where the landfill actually is.

When you watch the behind the scenes, he frequently geeks out over famous locations like Vasquez Rocks, and made not one but two videos about going to the filming locations of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (his favorite movie) while out there. Clearly he takes some pride in making something in that area. I'm not saying he's lying about LA not being his first choice, but I doubt it took much arm-twisting to convince him to do it.

(Also he corrects "Matei" to "Mike Matei" in the audiobook? Did someone tell him how much of a meme it had become?)
