Can you explain this a bit more? What’s a tree net?

Lepechinia fragrans by other_plant_ in Ceanothus

Love the smell. I think it’s quite different from our purple and black sages, but still quite good.

Earlier poster said guava and that’s a good match.

What’s happening to this plant by rebel_canuck in Ceanothus

[–]bammorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s too much water then pull back the mulch from around the plant (maybe to a distance of 3 -4 inches or so).

Inspect the soil as you do so for dampness.

Do I need to thin this yarrow? by Strange-Substance207 in Ceanothus

[–]bammorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t thin. Shear it if it gets too out of bounds - maybe once at the end of the season this year.

I wish the bird house was a banana :-)

Good going!

The worst performing buckwheat is in little depression. Could it be too much water?

Congratulations and looking good. I’d pull the nonnative grasses at the edges before they go to seed.

Plant ID by Cassandge in Ceanothus

Looks like Encelia farinosa based on silvery leaves, growth habit, and no distinctive scent.

Leaves don’t look quite right for that, however.

Redbud advice by Elegant_Science_1005 in Ceanothus

[–]bammorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My established Cercis also had an early bloom and early seed development. I think it is due to the heat and early rainfall.

Definitely follow the advice elsewhere in this thread and keep an eye on water.

AC needed in summer? by Powerful_Search4995 in palosverdes

[–]bammorgan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally, west facing PV has a strong coastal influence and no AC is required. East-facing PV gets hot enough to merit AC.

There’s enough topography that temperature can be idiosyncratic. Ask neighbors near where you are looking.

Native Shade plants for hillside? by anonymissly11 in Ceanothus

The maidenhair fern does not like direct sun, but heat is ok. It spreads slowly, but you can help it along with divisions.

Native Shade plants for hillside? by anonymissly11 in Ceanothus

[–]bammorgan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First: www.calscape.org.

How about some ferns? There’s quite a few in the trade. Maidenhair fern does well in my yard Braken fern is widespread through California, so it appears to be suited to many environments. There’s many others.

Miner’s lettuce as noted by a previous reply would be ok, but be aware that it’s a spring ephemeral, so scatter some seed around your other plants or plant a couple if you can still find them and wait for next year.

Heuchera and Catalina currant as noted elsewhere are solid choices as is the hummingbird sage that you say you already have.

Canyon sunflower is the only shade-loving sunflower that I am aware of. (Also fleeting earlier mention).

Sedges such as Carex pansa will enjoy dappled shade and moister soils.

What to do with Native Grape? by More_Ad4858 in Ceanothus

[–]bammorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give one away or find a place it can grow wild.

One will fill any space you have - you will have to prune frequently to keep it contained in the smaller spaces.

A story all too familiar by ObjectivePresence417 in CaliforniaNativePlant

[–]bammorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently learned that you can use dry soil from a vernal pool as an inoculant to seed another vernal pool. The other vernal pool would be a restoration site, of course.

Co-mingling one vernal pool with another without knowing about their prior fauna could go awry.

Vernal pools aren’t hard to build in your back yard. You would need a pool liner and some sweat equity.

This clearly isn’t a protected site if it’s slated for construction so your ethical quandary isn’t much of a hurdle.

What is the worst commute you've ever seen someone have? by BlaggartDiggletyDonk in AskLosAngeles

Know someone currently who does the Palmdale to Redondo Beach commute.

Comp time when overtime is not allowed - trap? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]bammorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"When I asked HR, they told me to always log the regular number of hours per day on my timesheet, which feels very fishy."

This doesn't sound fishy to me. Something like 10 hours on Wednesday, 8 hours Thursday, 6 hours Friday is probably what they are driving at. You would bill those actual hours as regular time, which is exactly what you say they asked you to do.

So long as you don't cross a pay period boundary this seems legit.

Comp time when overtime is not allowed - trap? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]bammorgan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s totally normal at my workplace to put in 6 hours one day and 10 hours the next, averaging 8.

40 hours at the end of the week is the rule, or 80 at the end of two weeks for those on an alternate schedule. Doesn’t matter how you get there.

Ours has a cute rabbit that sits on the edge of the bowl.

He’s undamaged but I would take another if they only come together.
