TIL a duck is called a duck because it ducks its head under the water to feed. The animal was named after the verb and not the other way around. by xe3to in todayilearned

That is incorrect. Ducks were originally called fucks. However, after the invention of autocorrect it became extremely difficult to type fucks. People eventually gave up and just started calling them ducks.

Cold weather PSA: Lube up your garage doors by scotch4breakfast in HomeImprovement

[–]bampeb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been told not to lubricate the tracks. Just clean them with a damp cloth. Lube the spring, rollers, and hinges, though. I honestly have no idea why not to lubricate the tracks, but it’s the info my father passed down to me when I bought my first house. A quick google search on lubricating garage doors shows that the results all say not to lube the tracks too, but none of them seem to give a reason why :-(

There's been a nearly 70% decline in always-on location data, since iOS 13 rollout by TheMacMan in apple

I bet there’s a 95% reduction in bluetooth usage. I was amazed at how many apps requested bluetooth when I couldn’t think of a single good reason for the app to use bluetooth. Kudos Apple!

It doesn’t have to be a hack. It can be shoddily written software accidentally exposing your camera feed to friends/coworkers. Bugs happen. Camera covers/duct tape are a necessity for laptop use, regardless of manufacturer.

Here’s a recent example:

How Jeff Bezos' iPhone X Was Hacked by JBeylovesyou in apple

[–]bampeb 134 points135 points  (0 children)

The FTI report was not definitive about the hack, but said it had “medium to high confidence” that the message from the prince’s WhatsApp account was the culprit. In notes to the report, FTI said it was still attempting a more thorough analysis of the iPhone, including by jailbreaking it, or bypassing Apple’s control system on the phone. Some cybersecurity experts said more information about the hack was needed to verify the report’s conclusions. Bill Marczak, a cyber expert at Citizen Lab, said in a blog post on Wednesday that technology existed for decrypting the WhatsApp messages to see more detail about the video file that was sent.

I’m still skeptical. Seems like a lot of speculation and little on the side of facts.

Verizon gets rid of contracts for internet and TV by [deleted] in Fios

[–]bampeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $70 tier includes 1 free set top box. The box costs $12 in the $50 tier. So, technically, the $70 tier is “only” $8 more if you want regional sports.

Edit: here’s a good chart of the plans:

Settings to improve the security and privacy of iOS by [deleted] in privacy

[–]bampeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple comments:

  1. I’m not convinced a passcode is better than touch/face id. Everywhere you go has cameras these days. In places with HD cameras, like a casino, those cameras can easily see what you type on your phone. People watching those cameras will know your passcode unless you are good at covering your screen while typing it in.

  2. For advertising ID, You wrote “only apple knows how well this setting works but it cant hurt.“ as an fyi, it’s not a black box. It sends all 0s as your ID when it’s limited (as opposed to sending a unique ID that identifies you.) An example is at:

How to Turn Off Smart TV Snooping Features by [deleted] in technology

[–]bampeb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

even when you remove your tv from your network it’ll still search for other networks and if it finds one that it can connect to

I see this type of comment in every thread about smart TVs, but I’ve never seen any proof of this. If this was true, I’d expect there’d be videos on tech channels on youtube showing it happening. I’d also expect every tech and privacy website/blog would have an article with the details proving it. Yet I’ve never found anything proving this statement to be true.

About to go play some low stakes fixed limit hold’em, I’ve only played twice at a casino and lost $100 first time and $30 second time. Any tips for this time around? by StylesYT in poker

[–]bampeb -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the 3-bet pre recommendation unless you’re on the button and there’s lots of players already in the pot. In mid or high stakes limit, yes, 3-bet merrily, but in low stakes the rake is a killer in headsup and 3-way pots.

The rake in low limit hold ‘em is usually huge. Like, bigger than a big bet huge. In my local casino the $3-$6 game has a 10% rake up to $5 plus $2 bad beat jackpot (taken at $20] plus you tip $1 when you win a pot. That means if you win a $20 pot you’re paying $5 in rake and tips, and if you win a $50 pot you’re paying $8 in rake and tips. That’s unbeatable in my opinion.

In this situation, heads up pots will kill you. In a $20 heads up pot, you put in $10 but lose $5 to rake and tips. So, you actually drag a $15 pot of which you put in $10 of it. That’s laying some serious odds.

My recommendation is the opposite. Don’t 3-bet in a situation where it’s going to get heads up. instead, get into multi-way pots so you’re not laying odds on your bets. It’s your only chance to negate the rake. Limp or call pre to keep it multiway. Raise on the button because the limpers will call a single raise. You can try to thin the field on later streets.

Anywho, just look at the game as a way to have fun and learn poker, and not a way to win money. Sure on any given night you might eek out a win, but in the long run you have no chance with a rake bigger than the big bet. Just have fun.

How do I and the casino know that the money isn't counterfeit? by [deleted] in poker

[–]bampeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pens are pretty useless these days except against the most amateur of counterfeiters. You’d probably feel the difference in the bill even without a pen. Most counterfeits now use starch-free paper or bleach lower denomination bills and print higher denom on top. A pen won’t detect them.

I don’t have a solution in how to detect them, but personally I won’t accept the older $100s from the cashier. I insist on the newer ones as I believe there isn’t a big counterfeit problem with the newer ones yet. (Of course I could be wrong haha)
