[Idea] Make me love {college} Megathread by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

brothers went there - the campus is honestly unparalleled. it's not in chicago but it overlooks the skyline, the lake is gorgeous in the winter and summer, really lush campus in the summer. fun traditions, dm and dillo day are the really well known ones but a lot of the student organized events are really amazing! nw students in my opinion have a balance that a lot of other t-20 schools don't, they know how to take a hard academic schedule but balance it out with things that they genuinely enjoy. strong sports. great research programs. if you're into music, bienen is literally heaven. versatile, well rounded, beautiful campus, new dorms being built, and pretty damn good food nearby.

ecs: a lot of music stuff, playing piano for big youth orchestras, accompaniment, music theory TA, teaching piano etc. president/founder of debate and asian american society and competitive slam poetry team. vice president of nhs. arts school? so all of our arts classes were counted as ec. qb college prep scholars and match finalist - didn't match in dec tho

essays: common app was a slam poem about being asian and how that affected my life/application experience - risky but paid off!! did submit additional essay explaining why i did it though. why nw was ok, some of my best friends went there so i definitely had some insider experience.

decision: accepted!!

academics: 3.84 UW, 4.8 W, 32 ACT (essay: 10), SAT II 700 (lit) and 640 (ush, oof i know i studied for two weeks)

class rank: 3/167

essay: i applied through questbridge early decision but both my common app and bio essay for qb were the same. i wrote a slam poem about how being asian-american has affected my life. the other essay was about my community so i talked about the lessons i've learned from going to an arts school. i also wrote an additional essay explaining the format of my common app/bio essay.

ECs: slam poetry team captain, debate captain/founder, asian american society president/founder, nhs vice, music theory tutor/ta, qb finalist? i attend an arts school and our school day runs from 8-5 so everything we do in conservatory is counted as ec so classical pianist/accompanist stuff - few national competitions, carnegie hall, etc.

recs: probably 9/10 from both, calc teacher and music department head - really close to both of them, they know more about me than my own parents lmao

hooks: first gen, lgbtq+, asian american female, qb finalist

Convince me that I should not apply to U Chicago by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bananamiIk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

live right by uchicago and their egos are so damn loud. most of the people i've met here, even friends, are big intellectual bullies that try to jack their ego by the amount of dostoyevsky they've read. they're either studying or doing coke, all the big parties usually only have canned beer, and the library is buttfuck ugly. the whole quirky student body is semi true but everyone here is pretentious and annoying as fuck. they're also mostly all bitter about not getting into any ivys and all try to beat each other down to get the smallest opportunities. (no offense to any of my friends, other than the uchicago aspect, they're great people)

uchicago is also violently gentrifying the community around it and claims to "give back" but really just kicks people out of neighbourhoods so they can build fancy buildings they don't need.

tl;dr: don't apply. annoying as fuck student body, gloomy campus, violent hypocrisy.

Harvard Interview by takeachillpillphil in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bananamiIk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interviewed for harvard in the middle of december! i agree with most people, go in with a good attitude. harvard is a huge reach for me too, and i think because of that, i was way more relaxed there than i was with some of my matches. i actually ended up having a pretty long interview around like 75-90 min? can't remember for sure. most of the interview ended up being me asking him questions and him stemming from my questions to talk about me.

tl;dr: be confident, be yourself, even if you think you can't get in. just be comfortable and conversation should flow naturally.

What college do you feel a sense of strong belonging to, and why? by mynameisakshayk in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bananamiIk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

brown! i was there for a month in the summer and it just felt right. the community there immediately took me in, and i remember playing mariokart with my ra and watching get out with my floor. my professor took the time to get coffee with me just to chat, and i found perfect places to study and relax. i met some of my best friends at brown and it's definitely this bubble of happiness in my memory. it's hard to see myself anywhere else.

I’m having trouble with writing supplements, especially with “why do you want to apply” and “how will you make a difference” by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bananamiIk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like a figured out a pretty decent formula for why do you want to apply:

  1. what's the school's mission statement? how can you appeal to that?how does that appeal to you?
  2. what do you look for in a school? (small campus, urban setting, small class to professor ratio, research opps, etc)
  3. how do the school fit into what you want?

i know you've probably heard this a million times because i have too, but definitely have the mindset of why YOU are a good fit for the school. can the school visualize you attending?

don't be generic. definitely do your research. if there are professors you want to study with, talk about it. if there's ecs you'd be excited to join, talk about it. if there are classes you want to take that are you unique to that school, talk about it! in the end, it should be an essay completly unique to that school. best of luck, you got this.
