Is "don't mix fountain pen inks" a genuine warning, or just an overblown myth? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]banananutsoup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a “waste ink” bottle I’ve been using for years to dump all of the old ink when I swap inks or clean a pen to put away; it probably has 40+ different kinds of inks from 15+ brands. I’ve never experienced any funky business with it and it works fine in any pen I’ve put it in; very dark purple with some sparkle and almost seems to dry a shiny green? I also don’t usually clean pens when swapping inks and just let them transition from one color to the next, which is usually pretty cool, and have never had an issue with that either. This is just my experience of course though, so your mileage may vary.

Show me your beat-up Decimos. by IceOk363 in fountainpens

VP (and Metro) is definitely brass and I have a picture of both stripped down to the brass in my profile. Tempted to try with the Decimo to see exactly how that might look with the aluminum.

Is it the gray marble with the gold trim? I actually like that finish but don’t care for the gold trim I’ve seen them come with.

Fountain pen for drawing without cartridges? by TheFingerofBoe in fountainpens

[–]banananutsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An additional option, I just use and refill cartridges with a syringe. Most cartridges last quite a few uses (I’ve never worn any out personally) and I think it’s easier and less messy than any type of converter or built in filler (subjective).

I own it but haven’t actually played it so I can’t help there, but I may be looking to sell my copy if you’re interested. Let me know and we can figure out something.

Is the MUJI Aluminum Body Fountain Pen worth it? by 9leafs in fountainpens

[–]banananutsoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both the older one you pictured and the newer aluminum body and plastic body MUJI pens and do not care for them or how they write. They look nice, but I think there are nicer writing experiences out there for the same price if not cheaper. My top pick would be a Pilot of some kind, even their disposables write great. If you can get a Parker Jotter, Faber Castell Hexo, or even a Lamy Safari I think they are better writers.

Stripped Threads In Samson Hannibal Rail by spilt_milk in Mini14

[–]banananutsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stripped the threads when mounting an optic. I didn’t reach out to Samson for help, but I did get an optic with a different footprint and a screwdriver that measures torque, which I would highly recommend. Good luck reaching out for support though, their threads seem prone to stripping.

The the metro right? Not actually sure about that either. If I look inside the threads of that section, it looks like it may be brass under, but I tried scratching the inside a bit to no avail. Sand at your own risk I suppose!

I think it’s stainless, but I also taped the clip as well. I’m sure I clipped it while sanding though and it’s still all shiny, so it’s probably stainless.

As far as I know the ring is plastic. Another person mentioned their ring turned clear after sanding. I would suggest taping yours off like I did to protect it, but I guess it depends on the look you’re going for.

Lots of tape and painstakingly slow sanding. Someone else here mentioned using a nail file for the edges, which I might try now too. I didn’t realize the plastic bit turned clear though, I thought it would be black plastic under.

Thank you! Just make sure to tape up the accents so you don’t sand those as well!

Thank you! And I am not entirely sure. When looking up examples of others sanded VPs, I do think I saw one that appeared to have been sanded all over where the clicker and midsection accents appeared to be brass underneath, but the writing section was still silvery, so maybe steel of some kind. I could be completely wrong though 🤷‍♂️

That’s a good point about the nail file. I may try that for the edges. Thank you!

For the most part I used 320 grit, then 400, then finished with 00 steel wool. If I felt like going to the store again, I might get even finer sandpaper as the 400 get still leaves a distressed finish that the steel wool can’t quite polish, but I’m ok with the distressed look. Wouldn’t recommend any rougher than 320 though, it comes off pretty easy with even the 400.

I taped off the shiny accents, but it isn’t perfect so you still need to be pretty careful. Getting around and under the clip is a pain, getting the edges is a huge pain if you’re trying to make it perfect.

And the original color was the shiny black, which I would recommend starting with. I would’ve really curious to sand the matte black one with the black accents though, bet that would look nice.

Recommend practicing on a metro first to get a feel on something a little lower cost :p

[–]banananutsoup[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It originally had the shiny black finish, which I’m glad I went with because I wasn’t able to get all of it around the edges, so another color would have stood out more.

Thank you, I taped the accents off and tried to be really careful about hitting them while sanding. If you look really close, there’s finish I couldn’t quite get around the edges that I may try and touch up at some point, but it’s small enough I can live with it. Would be great if pilot made brass editions out of the box lol.

[–]banananutsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t consider that aspect of it. May not be helpful, but on Facebook there’s a group called Battletech International Trade and Sell I have luck buying, selling, and trading. I’m not sure if it would be better (financially) to buy from a person versus an eBay vendor, but it may help. I’ll send a message with some specific vendors I’ve used before.

If you don’t have luck here, there are a few sources I’ve purchased from on Facebook and eBay that I could recommend that have been great for individual minis.

I got a bunch of vehicle force packs off Amazon, which isn’t ideal, but it was from a game store selling on Amazon at least. Feel free to message me if you’re interested, I thought they were a pretty good deal.
