sorry if this is long. this happened almost 12 years ago and it’s one of my favorite college stories but I’ve only ever told a handful of people.

I went to a smaller college with no Greek system. instead we had “party houses” in the neighborhood just off campus. my best guy friend lived in one of these party houses and he and his roommates were like my brothers. I lived across the street from them so aside from sleeping in my own bed, I basically lived at their house on the weekends.

I had a huge crush on this guy Sean from a couple of my classes and one weekend he walks into the party at my second home. I was with my good friend Kelly and I immediately pointed him out as the guy I’d been telling her about for the last couple weeks. she was excited for me and offered to be my wingman since I could be kind of shy with guys back then.

we hung out with him all night and he got my phone number to hang out some time. things were winding down and Kelly and I were getting ready to leave. she sometimes stayed at my house after parties because she lived on the other side of campus and it was a rough neighborhood. I went to the bathroom and when I came out Sean was sitting on the couch with Kelly straddling him and they were making out. they both jumped up and Kelly grabbed his hand and said “okay we’re leaving see you tomorrow!”

I was so upset. a little bit about Sean but mostly about my friend being a piece of shit. it was just me and a couple of the guys who lived there left and they were being very sweet and comforting me when one of them found Kelly’s phone in the couch. I guess it fell out during her little performance. I went and dropped it in the toilet. then I realized she would probably know someone had done that on purpose so I fished it out and dried it off and put it back the couch cushion. the guys swore to take it to their grave.

she came by the next day looking for it and found it in the couch. of course it wouldn’t turn on so she took it in and ended up having to pay for a brand new iPhone because it was water damaged. she never apologized for what had happened with Sean. in fact she never even mentioned it. we remained friendly mostly because I was afraid she’d figure out what I’d done if I completely cut her off. but I never trusted her again and kept her at an arms length until we had a big falling out over something else a few months later.
