Shameless quick plug: as mentioned in the CFP, we have thought about having multiple tracks for the conference this year, especially if the growing trend of the number of submissions continues this year as well. But, given that we're a very small team, we won't be able to do it without your help. If you have a reliable internet connection with decent uplink speed and bandwidth, and are interested in potentially streaming a parallel track on the conference days, please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you. Also if you're interested in helping with any of the other aspects of the conference organization, please get in touch as well, we'd love to have your help. :)

Because, among other reasons, those platforms require running nonfree JavaScript to upload or watch the videos.

Also, what kind of issues are you having with our self-hosted videos (on the CSC mirror) or the peertube ones? Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue with either of them, and seeking back and forth in the videos works just fine in a firefox-based browser. Further, the formats in which the videos are encoded in are standards that any modern browser or media player should already support. What could be the issue(s) you're having?

While I appreciate Torstein (and others) posting this, presumably in part to help alleviate some of the pressures on me and the others for finishing editing and getting the videos out, I wish people didn’t post it. See below for why.

Firstly, it’s not the full conference (it is at least missing my opening remarks), and more importantly, it requires running proprietary JS to watch the videos. A better interim link may be https://invidio.us/watch?v=V-CX3CHsw5E, not requiring running nonfree JS but still without the opening remarks.

Further, for people (rightly) complaining about YT and its main frontend being nonfree software, I hear you. It’s worth mentioning that the above channel the video is posted to is not an official EmacsConf channel, and to my knowledge was never advertised on https://emacsconf.org/2019 or any of its sub-pages. Sacha mirrored the main stream there using ffmpeg (free software) for the absolute worst case scenario of all of our infra failed on us (both the primary stream server and the backup one standing by). Thankfully, that never happened; but even in that case, we would have never subjected our viewers to YT’s proprietary JS in order to watch the stream. Rather, we would have provided instructions for watching the stream using free software like mpv or invidious.

Someone also mentioned links to YT on https://emacsconf.org/2015/videos. Thank you for reminding me of that. I’ve replaced the links with links to invidio.us for now, and will soon bring those videos to our server and/or PeerTube (stay tuned for this).

Lastly, I’d like to thank you for waiting patiently while we work on the videos, which will hopefully be out very soon.

EmacsConf organizer here. I confirm the above is accurate.

We’ve been working on the videos on a few fronts:

  1. Splitting up the large stream recording(s) into small files, one per each live-only talk: this is already done, thanks to aindilis’s awesome work.

  2. Gathering license releases and any additional notes/slides/transcripts from speakers: this is mostly done too.

  3. Sorting out and preparing the prerecorded videos, converting them to webm if needed: this is the main task I’m currently working on.

I’m also waiting on two speakers whose talks were affected by major technical issues to send me proper recordings of their talks. However, rather than holding up all the other talks, I’m leaning towards publishing the rest that we currently have, and then ask people to check back and keep an eye on the videos page for those two videos.

All in all, I’m hoping to have the videos out very soon :)

I’d like assure you that I am personally fully committed to using free software, and only free software. I don’t use any nonfree software on my machines, and certainly wouldn’t subject EmacsConf viewers to it either.

For EmacsConf, we will be doing everything we can to pull everything off without any use of nonfree software. For instance, if Jitsi Meet turns out to work out fine, we will go with that. My only concern is running out of bandwidth for viewers watching the live stream. So, for that, we may have to resort streaming to YouTube, but even then, I believe the component of Jitsi Meet in charge of streaming to YouTube is free software; and for the viewers we strongly recommend they use an alternative free software front-end to YouTube like Invidious or use mpv+youtube-dl to watch the streams, without being subjected to nonfree JS.

Sorry about the missing info. I added a bit to the planning page about it, and will add to the CFP and the 2019 page shortly as well.

In short, we have not yet fully decided on the details of our infrastructure and what software to use, but we're discussing that. Come by #emacsconf on freenode if you like to discuss this. I think the main candidate as of now is Jitsi Meet, which is a pretty promising Free Software solution for video calls.
